Which tool do I need? 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Recently I picked up a drivers backrest on ebay. It's a pretty simple design that uses the stock passenger pillion mount.

It's a 3/8" thick x 1 1/2" wide piece of hardened flat-bar, with about a 1 inch slot cut into the end. [See image below]

What I want to do is lengthen the slot [shown in red] by about an inch, so I can slide the backrest further back.

I know there's got to be some sort of drill bit, similar to a router bit, that cuts sideways, but I don't know what it's called. Anyone have any ideas?

Keep in mind, this is a pretty stout metal bar and needs a bit that can handle it.

An easy solution would be to drill a hole back where you want I to go, thyhen take a cutoff wheel and take the slot back... the clean the alot up with a grinding wheel and file... that's what I would do...

I don't have any special tools like a router or anything. I would say drill a hole at the spot you want the slot in the metal to end at, then use a dremel with a metal cutting wheel and cut 2 straight lines from the original slot to the ne drilled hole. There you have it, slot extended. Or depending on the width, if you don't have a dremel, you could use a angle grinder and just grind the slot as long as you want it to be.

Correction, it's more like 3/8" thick.

Sadly, all I have at my disposal right now is a drill. No Dremel tool or grinder. Besides, as thick as this bar is, a Dremel tool would take forever, if it would work all and a grinder probably wouldn't fit in a slot that small. If I had a drill press, I could just drill consecutive holes 1/16 of an inch at a time but since I don't have a press, it would be next to impossible keep it straight with a hand held drill, hence the need of a side cutting bit.

Blue Tip wrench? LOL

Man I would say, take it to your nearest machine shop or welding/fabricating shop. Take em 5 minutes and they probably won't charge you. Offer to buy em a burger or 6 pack and you might make a friend for when you need something else done.

if you have a decent jigsaw [vairiable speed] with the right blades you can drill your hole then cut your slot. keep the speed low and use cutting oil to keep the blade cool. you will use up more than 1 blade. if the metal is to hard to drill or cut take it to a machine shop, mort

If you don't have a grinder, do it the old fashion way with a hacksaw..it will take a while but will do a nice job............
