Nice project starter bike....XS650 (MN) 1 Year ago

This looks like a cool little project bike that has a few mods already done to it. For the record, I have no interest in this bike- don't know the guy at all. But it's typical of what pops up when searching for the old XS650's. For less than what you'd spend on a moped or Chinese junk 'pocket bike', you could have a solid Jap design that is a classic. And parts are readily available at almost any bike salvage yard used, or through MikesXS.com. These bikes are easy to work on, and a Dad could get his son (or daughter) a lot worse when looking for a starter two-wheeler...

What's nice about the old XS650's is that you can get a 750 Big Bore Kit from MikesXS, port the engine, add stainless steel headers and some shorty tapered-tip exhausts, jazz up the carbs a bit, (all for a start), and have a bike that will run stoplight-to-stoplight with much bigger and newer bikes. I loved mine, but just couldn't convince my wife to let me keep two motorcycles AND a car in a one-car garage....

I just bought my son his first bike for $350.
It's a 1992 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 with 15K miles. The woman I bought it from laid it down and broke the shifter peg and foot rest off and she let it set for about a year.
I spent $70.00 to buy the foot peg and shifter, no case damage. We got it started and it did not make any funny noises. We are goint to bob it and build his first street bike.
I will post pics when we get it done, I figure that I am going to have around $800 or $900 in it when we are done. It won't be nothing fancy just a good clean starter bike for him.

I have an XS 650, and an SV650. Probably my favorite displacement class. So many great bikes with 1,2,3,and 4 cylinders in this displacement.
On the Vulcan 500, It's basically the Ninja 500 motor with milder cams, lower rev limit, and a tad smaller carbs. Reliable as an axe. Good beginner bike that can do freeway if need be.
