The only assumption you should make while riding is that the other guy (not the one you know and trust, but the "other" other guy) will most likely do something unexpected or downright stupid right about the time you let yourself get too close to them.
I had a woman, traveling in the same direction as me, try to execute a right turn from the center of 3 lanes, and take me out.
