Of course the price difference made my biggest decision on my R* vs HD, but it's hard to compare a R*'s ride to a Roadking's ride with the air ride suspension. When I bought my R* I was comparing it with the HD Softail Deluxe and the R* had a much better ride and more comfy seat........I believe it's all in what makes you happy, I had a HD Sportster before my R* and I loved the Sporty for what it was and it was dependable and very fast and nimble, but....for longer rides and riding passengers I might as well had a crotch rocket!

If you are going to make comparisons

Lets be fair...

The R* is a Softail and should be compared to a HD in the Softail Family.. like the Heritage or the Fat Boy...

The Road King is A Glide....

Loved my HD Glide...for seven years...

Love my R* Softail...even more

Hello, just new around here. And I have to say I´m from Portugal. Here in Portugal we called it the Wild Star instead of the Road Star. But the some quality . Since I was a kid I always dreamt of a HD and when I bought my first Star (VStar 650) I found out that it isn´t the bike that makes the rider, it´s the outher way around. The Road Star is very very good bike and with what you save you can use it to change the way you want it.

hey, jonas!

another rider on the peninsula.

where abouts in portugal are you?

I have to agree with "Pop Rivet" as well... to compare a Road Kink to the Star is Apples and Pears. I rented an H-D Heritage once and that helped me decide to buy my R*.
The Harley’s rental ad said, “First ride, then decide”, so I did rode an H-D, and I decided on a Star!
After riding a V* for a few months, I went to see family up North. I Went to the H-D dealer and rented a brand new, shiny red, Road King, and drove it with luggage and my misses (not one in the same (the misses shifted her weight, the luggage didn’t! ) for about forty miles in New England. It was hot, top heavy, it shook us like an earthquake when we stopped... and, my legs were too short... I came to a stop, looked left... the misses looked right... and over we went, Twice! We looked like Artie Johnson, on “Laugh-in”. It was way too top heavy with a “two-up” and luggage.
After two hours, I took it back and got the Heritage. All I can say about the heritage is, it looked “nice”...

But, it was slow, underpowered, temper mental, noisy (all stock) and expensive! (The misses asked ‘cause we were considering buying the Harley name...) Nearly did too! After six months on my Star “WE” are so glad we didn’t get the H-D! And, after all, Nothing shines like a Star!

Re:Road Star vs Road King 4 Years, 3 Months ago
funny i found this topic up for discussion today...because a co-worker just told me that i could get a harley now! he said this because i laid my roadstar down yesterday morning . someone in on coming traffic decided to pass, while i was still in the lane !!!

it all happened so quick that all i remeber is locking the brakes down and the bike goin down on the right side. the bike ended up on the left side in the grass on the shoulder! i had all my leather on so i walked away without even a scratch !! i know i was very fortunate to have not been hurt. the driver was 16 and just got his license!!

well point is that now its up to the insurance company if they wanna total the bike or fix it, and that is what brought up the harley talk. i had to inform my coworker that harley just last year started puttin out a 96 cubic engine, and that my roadie was a 102! i then informed him that if i were to get a harley i would get less horsepower, less torque, less stock chrome, less reliability, and all that less for about $6K more in price !!

i think harley makes nice bikes, but they certainly do not make them stock as nice as some of the metrics, look at the hand controls, they look cheap!! i know there is more support out there for harleys and that there is this whole industry behind them, but i dont ride for the name on the bike, i ride for the ride!!!

the vast price difference simply rules out any debate to me! i refuse to pay that much more $$ for a bike that is notoriously less reliable and certainly not as dressy stock!! and once you've purchased the harley everything costs an arm and a leg for the darn thing!! HD really means HUNDREDS of DOLLARS !!!

besides with all the compliments i get about how good my harley looks...why would i get a real one ????

Ditto what BB said...And here I was thinking all the crazy drivers were out gunning for ME on I-285. Maybe you'll get a good settlement from the insurance co. and can take advantage of the closeouts on the NON-FI R* still on the showroom floor.

Hate that you went down. For a white bike, it was a beauty!!
