I like Mark7's compromise of riding early Sun mornings, etc. That always feels like the safest time to me. This allows you to keep enjoying the stress relief of riding and minimize your exposure. My better half is struggling with a somewhat similar dilemma concerning her teenaged children with the recent passing of her ex and their father. The fear of something happening while riding weighs heavy on her mind. As was mentioned here prior, family should always be foremost and in our heart of hearts, you'll know it's the right choice.
