Mostly it just gets rid of a big chunk of ugly. I'm sure it lets more air to the motor and it can help with decel popping. But mostly it's just ugly. Doesn't need to be there. Taking it off won't affect how the bike runs one way or the other. It's just ugly.

Did I mention it's ugly

They're all pretty much the same. You just need two plugs and something to cap off the nipple on top of the manifold. Some people use fired 45 ACP cases for plugs. Hard to put a diffuculty level on it. If the elbows come right out of the motor it's pretty easy. But sometimes they can be a pain in the backside. Mostly it just takes time to get all the junk off.

I found that pulling the plugs worked best with a modified vice grip. Standard vice grip with a 2 foot length of threaded rod instead of the adjuster screw plus some kind of sliding weight like on a dent puller. One came out easy. The other severely tried my patience till I used some of the air-in-a-can freon. Turned it upside down without shaking it and sprayed the freon liberally at the plug. It contracts the metal for easy removal. Whatever you put in the holes put them in the freezer overnight. They'll contract and pop in real nice. Got that tidbit from the pros on this site.

It took me longer to make the tool to remove the elbows than it did to complete the rest of the project. I used some vise grips attached to a some threaded stock and used it as a slide hammer to remove the elbows. Make sure you put the plugs in the freezer over night prior to installing them in the cylinders.

Don ... here's a little trick I pick up here to do that job .... get yourself a can of Dust Off and turn upside down and spray it on the elbows. It acts like Freon and freeze the metal which will contract, get it as cold as you can then start yanking it out, then the same for the other side...... a 3 beer job ... one for each side and the third when your done admiring the clean look and getting ride of the uglys!
