how about bolting to seat pan(if it is strong enough for the force on the pan when you lean back) and welding a tab to the backrest
or you could use the holes in the fender and run a piece of steel under your fender bra bolted or welded to your mustang backrest, not attached to your seat but still clean and woudln't require you to mess with a perfectly good seat...right now im working on rigging up my custom world international backrest from my shadow to some bent steal from the rear seat mount because i dont want to cut up my saddlemen solo
your looney seat is so thin you may end up feeling bolts underneath it which may not feel good after a few miles

I thought about making some kind of bracket to mount to the fender. That's one of my rough ideas. I was also thinking of making a plate to mount it to the top of the lip along the back of the seat. I'm thinking a plate underneath and on top, bolted through, would be strong enough.

Musky, Since your seat pan is not steel, my idea wouldn't work anyway.
But, before I decided to go with the Mustang, I was thinking about going with the Corbin solo. Highway Hawk has a solo backrest that I was going to try to fab a similar backrest bracket from that would use the rear sub fender support bolt under the seat, and the front 6mm bolt hole from passenger seat mounting area. That way only one mounting bracket support would be exposed. In your case, you would just need to mount the inner part of the Mustang bracket to it, your backrest would then still be fully adjustable..
This is how the Highway Hawk mounts:

Ray was (maybe still is ) working on an easy on / off backrest for his seat. There is a couple pics on the Looney seat site. He said they were having trouble with the quick detach part of it. I don't really like the looks of it but it looks like it attaches to the back of the seat. Wish I could get a better pic of the attachment point. I asked him once if it will work with his fender bib and he said it would.

Could you make a "custom" bracket that would bolt to the rear fender where the passenger seat was , that would accept your backrest? BB

The problem with using the rear fender is I have a Looney fender bib. It goes right in under the back of the seat so the isn't any open space. And the bib is thick. It's not just a leather bib like the Mustang bib is. Drilling holes in it will be a last resort.
