could the dealer be right? 9 Months ago
I have an 04 Roadie, over the years I asked the dealer questions and this is his answers
1 Do I need to lube the brake and clutch?
Answer not unless they are stiff.

2 Do I have to adjust the valves?
Answer they are hydrolic and self adjusting.

3 Bearings in front fork do they need replacing
Answer Only if fork is not moving freely.
Also Oil in fork
Answer Only if leaking

4Swingarm bearing replacement
Answer. Only if to much play or not moving freely

I did replace the front fork bearing at 23,000 I now have 54k seems ok
I am replacing swingarm bearing at 54k for first time eventhough dealer says if it seems ok leave it.
Why would he say that things are not needed when he gets money for doing the work?

He said the book says all this and that to cover their own butt. Which I could see.
He might be right since I went 54k without changing swingarm bearing and it still seems ok.
Thanks for input
Ron

OK Here goes. I will probaley catch some crap for this but here goes. Shoot some of the veterans on the clinic refer to me as the Road* test pilot. So for you guys/gals who have seen this already just breeze past it. Those of you that have not seen then read on Brothers and Sisters. I have abused and punished my beast since day one. I want to see what she will do. So here is minor list of what I have put my 06 Roadie through.

1)Death Valley run in 125 degree heat, in stop and go traffic.(pass)
2)12,000 miles on Mobil 1 15w50 Car Oil (heck it says it is Guaranteed for 15,000 miles) (pass) was a little brown and loosing its viscocity
3)16,000 Miles on plugs (fail) electrodes slighty burnt)
4)25,000 Miles before checking valves(pass)
5)25,000 Miles before checking Swingarm/Triple Tree bearings (pass)
6)10,000 Miles on my K&N filter before cleaning (pass) fairly dirty but still breathable.
7)11,000 Miles on a Rear Pirelli Route Tire (fail) too many burn outs
8)13,000 Miles on my Metz 880 Rear and still counting (pass) looks like it may have about 2,000 to 4,000 more left with no burn outs
lot harder to burn out with then the Pirelli or original Slipstone.
only got 12,000 out of that original tire.
9)20,000 Miles Lube and Inspect cables (pass)
10)35,000 Miles Right now with same fuel filter (pass)
11)35,000 Miles On Belt (pass) no gouges/missing ribs or fraying

There are a few other crazy tests I have done. As far as the regular maint. I do keep to the schedule on those Items. Every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. When I have changed my front and back tires I have repacked a little Grease around what pretty much looks like sealed berings. NOTE/NOTE/NOTE Here is a must that I have come across during my checks . Check all nuts bolts and fastners every 4,000 miles. Some have a tendency too vibrate loose(this is a must for those of us that ride hard I.E. hitting the rev limiter quite often/doing burn outs/going 110 on the freeway)

By the way I hit my rev limiter around 2-3 times a day and never had the SVS. I add a few ounces of MMO every third tank of gas.

Well I hope this has helped some of you out, But please do not try all of this just because I have. Just nice to know that If ya miss an oil change by a few hundred or so miles that you will be Ok.

Take Good Care and God Bless all of you. Brother OSO

My 2001 R* has 43,000mi and I care about that bike but...
If this is the confession thread here goes...

I have checked swing arm and steering bearings, not replaced
The engine noise never changed so checked valves @42,000mi
I will NOT pay $50 for 4 quarts of oil and drain it out at 4000mi
I finally put in new plugs they showed signs of wear @42,000mi
She's just back from the recall work and no other faults found

I mean nothing against all those who do so much more: good for you and your bikes
But I got started riding late in life and I put a premium on saddle time.
My point is they need care and maintenance, But these are tough solid bikes,
And right now I need to go meet friends for Breakfast,
It's 33 F outside and I will go out, pull the enricher, start her up and ride off, in a half mile or so I push in the enricher.
This is no jab at anybody, just (it works for me)

Wow RSCSTAR you got me beat by a few. One thing I do not do is sacrifice my safty and that of others. But man that is pushing the limit with that front tire ther on your SIG pic. I run my down just till the Grooves start to disapear. I do alot of high speed freeway riding. Blowout is not fun at those speeds Take Care and Have a Good Day. OSO

Yeh that tire pic is as bad as I ever let that go.
Tire was getting close but had a weekend come up and by the time it was over (about 1100mi) that tire was shot and I was worried about it.
solved the problem though...now I have 2 bikes

Re:could the dealer be right? 9 Months ago
Ok so if RSCstar is confessing that I might as well too. So here goes.
2000 R* 58,638 miles as of today.
At about 13,000 found the rear wheel had a loose bearing. Argued with Yamaha that the wheel was defective. No Hub should loose a bearing if built right. To no avail. I ate that one.
At around 40,000 had a problem with the aftermarket ignition module so I changed the plugs thinking that was the problem. But it wasn't so keep the new plugs in.
I try to change my oil every 5-6000 miles. Most of my riding is highway.
I have never adjusted valves!
Other then changing tires I have not done a flipping thing. I do add some grease around bearings in the wheels when I change a tire. I check the front end for looseness but if there is no play why touch it. I check the swing arm when changing the rear tire don't have any slop in it.I have had vehicles with well over 180,000 miles and still had the same bearings with no problems. I have not found any zerk fittings on the bike or I would grease them. So I guess I must be the worst person on this site.

I guess I'm working too hard. I change the oil every 3-4k, and on second set of tires (first one lasted 18k and quite a few burnouts). But I haven't checked the swingarm bearings, I'm still on the first belt and spark plugs. Haven't even THOUGHT of checking the valves. Is that all? Only problem I have is a damaged race in the neck, and that happened when I hit a car. It pulled out in front of me!

And before you ask... Yes, it hurt.
