Lost Key 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Well, I finally lost my "second" key. I wen't to the lake and when I got ready to leave I couldn't find my "only" key anywhere.
Not really sure of what to do at this point. Does anyone know of a remedy besides a new ignition and gas cap? This sucks! but at least I didn't have the steering locked when I did it so I have that to be thankful for.

Yamaha may be able to give you the key code by using your VIN number. I'm not sure, but it's worth a shot. If you bought it new, it should have come with a little tab on the keyring that has the key code on it.

They can recut them from vin number if it wasn't changed...
the key code makes it easier.. and having a spare hidden on the bike is always a blessing.
I keep my insurance up in case someone wants to make it theirs...

No, I bought my bike used and didn't get but one key and no key code. The bad part is that I've threatened to get another key on several occasions but never got around to it.

Anyway, I just got off the phone with the nearest dealership and the guy seemed to know less than I did. At any rate, when I hung up the phone I didn't know anymore than when I made the call. He doesn't even know if the key code is on the ignition or not, much less where it's located.

I like the idea of hidden spare. I don't keep my key on a ring because I don't want it rubbing the gas tank and with a single key I'm surprized that I've gone this long without losing it. I took the key out to keep someone else from making it theirs in the first place so maybe I need to check on some dummy insrance. (full coverage)

get a mirror...

I think maybe the key code is stamped under the cover for the key slot on the gas tank cap

LOL, I wouldn't doubt it but have to say I'm surprized that the local yamaha dealership doesn't even know. They lost one of their best guys to the new harley dealership and another transferred to another yamaha dealership. On top of everything else, the only locksmith in town is out of service until May 10th due to surgery "if" everything heals accordingly. One thing is for sure, IF I can get the key code and a key made, I'm going to get FOUR of them.

Mine didn't match up....... A good locksmith can cut one for you , it ain't cheap , but probably cheaper than a new cap and switch. BB

Found a place online keysbycode .com that can make keys using the vin number... for motorcycles and just about everything else.
so Yamaha Dealer should be able to do it, but we don't call them stealers for nothing...

Oops they need the code went to the order page on the web site and they ask for code first.

I have the gas cap for my own bike in my hand and it does have some letters and numbers on it: however, I just talked to Yahama customer servvice and they told me that isn't it. They told me that if you can find out who the original selling dealer was that they may have a record of it. Otherwise see a locksmith or buy new locks!
