Found a place online keysbycode .com that can make keys using the vin number... for motorcycles and just about everything else.
so Yamaha Dealer should be able to do it, but we don't call them stealers for nothing...
Oops they need the code went to the order page on the web site and they ask for code first.
Thats a little scary, someone get's the vin off your bike and hooks up with these guys to make a key.. I don't like that too much....

after reading this forum... I'm heading in to have a few extra keys made. I think this time I'll try and learn from someone else's mistake instead of "smashing" my own finger.

A friend of mine kept looseing the key for his goldwing. It would fall inside the fairing. So we got him a pink float for boat keys. He's not lost it since.
It helps to have one zip tied some place where you can get to it. Hope you can get your keys replaced.

Yikes.......I had a spare made, but after reading this, I like the idea of the zip tied spare as well. Wouldn't want to be at a Rally, etc and suddenly be keyless!
(You'd think I'd of thought of something like this AFTER my lil' mishap in Myrtle Beach a couple of years ago on a bike/golf week trip. We trailered the bikes there and since we loaded them up the night before, Mr Absentminded never thought of his key! Luckily, half our group were 'golfers only' and flying in the next day. I was able to get one of them to pick up my key. Otherwise, I was going to find out just how worthwhile my AAA membership was! )
BTW......anyone know of a source for OEM style keys (black plastic coated)? My only source locally is ONE solitary Key Shop, but they only have the cheesy blanks. (I know it's really anal of me, but I'd rather pay the extra for the OEM key)

Just my don't trust thieves attitude talking here but I wouldn't zip tie, tape, or little magnetic box a key on my bike. They know all the hiding places. And even if they don't how many places are there to hide it? If you can get at the key so can they. It's like shoving your wallet in to the toe of you shoe at the beach . Everyone does that and the thieves know where to look.

That sounds like paranoia talking. I think I'm going to take my chances but maybe I better put a key in my side cover plate and keep some allans in my saddlebags. A theif smart enough to figure that out and not too lazy too check is pretty rare in Arkansas or so I think.
Ok, here is the bottom line. After talking to several people including the big wigs at yamaha motors it turns out that the only way to get a key code if you have lost your keys and key code tab is to contact the dealer that sold the bike and hope they kept a record of it and don't mind going to the trouble of finding it for you. Turns out that my bike was purchased in Abiline Tx from Max Cycles and after speaking to someone on the phone who had an accent, sounded fresh out of high school, and didn't know what a key code was, I was put on hold only to find out that their records are stored in a warehouse and it would be too much trouble to dig through them and find it. I would rather they just lied and said they didn't keep a record of the key codes but maybe I deserve the truth.
Anyway, my semi local dealer gave me the name of a locksmith that he knows can make a key for a polaris four wheeler and hopefully he can make one for a roadstar. We'll se.

Does anyone know of a remedy besides a new ignition and gas cap?
Call a locksmith. They will come to your location and make a key for your ignition. No code needed, vin#'s don't matter. That is what they get paid to do. Should be about $65-$85 for the house call plus time and the key blank. Might be cheaper if you bring the bike to them in your truck or whatever.

Razor,
let us know how it works out, and most of us that have read this will try and learn from it..
I had Keys cut for my car with the VIN # it was a Ford Mustang Salvage car and they just looked it up in a book put a key blank in this hand tool that you dial in corresponding numbers and punch out the blank.
You would think that all keys would be able to be done like this with proper proof of it being yours.
