You have a lot of drag on the bike ..... plus the weight (not talking about you ).

Could be why you are so low 'cause your carb does not look like it's jetted rich.

Do you really get 45mpg?? I would just mess my pants with excitement if I could get that kind of mileage. I normally am getting 37-38 so to have gotten 40 was great but I know it's just a fluke cause of the tail wind. And I wish I could take graysnakes suggestion and only ride with a tail wind but man those trips are hard to plan!

With the 35 reinstalled, I get 43-45 regularly for around town cruising...I've gotten 50+ on trips...it is definitely attainable!

Regards, Ted

I know you say the bike doesn't seem to be jetted rich but I will tell you that my new pipes have black soot all over the ends of the pipes. Would that not indicate a rich condition???

Not necessarily .... don't forget you use the choke on startup so that's where a lot of your soot is probably coming from.

I never use the choke. I just hit the starter and off she goes. Now I may have to hold the throttle open a little for about 15 seconds to keep the rpm up slightly but other then that I don't use the choke.

That sounds like your choke isn't closing properly. You should always need to use the choke (excuse me..."enricher") when you're starting a cold engine. Could be the reason for all the soot and maybe the poor mileage. Just my .02.

Coug, ya beat me to it.

Since I never use the (enricher) and you all are saying I should then I'm right about running to rich. So I think I might take it to a local guy here and let him dyno and set it up better. I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying this and that I would rather pay someone to make it right and be done with it. I ride everyday to work and even ride every weekend so I would rather get it done fast and be back out on the road. Just hit 59,000 this morning when I stopped for fuel.
