Magnetic Oil Plugs - Useful or a Myth? 5 Months, 1 Week ago
Feedback from the group on whether these are worth messing with would be appreciated.

Can't hurt. It's only money you'd probably spend towards dumb stuff like chrome, leather, lights, etc.

Whatever metal particles are stuck to the magnet are NOT floating around with the oil possibly doing damage.

I have a couple hard drive magnets I sttck on my oil filter. I would rather trap the stuff in the filter than in my motor. Just my opinion.

I have seen people use cow magnets on the oil filter.

Those hard drive magnets are powerful! If you can get them out you definitely want them on your filter. They ain't comin' off either. Good alternative.

Mark7,

I don't know for sure that the magnetic oil plugs I put in are really doing anything. Maybe - maybe I'll see some metal shavings this weekend when I do my first oil change since putting them in.

But I took the tack that I needed smaller-head plugs anyway to get rid of the problems taking the 17mm bolt out of the front. And at $1.99 apiece, it just couldn't hurt to put them in.

I have eight small Neodymium disc magnets stuck in various places on the underside of my motorcycle - but not to collect metal shavings. Ever pull up to a stoplight on your bike and wait and wait and wait because it never changes? Ever notice those lines they cut in the asphalt just before the light? There are magnetic sensors in those grooves that detect when a car drives over it, activating the signal to change. My roadie will activate MOST of them, but there was one light in particular I went through almost every day that the roadie just wouldn't trigger (too much aluminum and not enough iron underneath that thing, I guess). Anyway, all of those magnets stuck under the bike seem to make a difference. I don't have to wait at that light forever anymore.
