Spring Comparison... Which One??? 5 Months, 1 Week ago
I've recently taken the leap and added a trailer hitch and started pulling a trailer behind the bike. By myself it's no big deal. But riding 2-up and pulling the trailer, the rear suspension is about maxed out. So I'm definitely going to upgrade the rear spring and have it narrowed down to two; Eibach's 1000 lb. spring or Progressive Suspension's 850-1200 lb. spring. I kinda like the idea of the Progressive spring being..... well, progressive, in that one-up it rides like a 850 lb. spring, but the more weight you add, the stiffer it gets. And both cost the same; Eibach on Ebay for $79 (Buy It Now) and the Progressive from Phat Performance for $79.

Anybody got any input on either one??? Pros??? Cons???

Thanks in advance!!!!

In The Wind,
Aaron

I would go with the Progressive, being that they're the same price. I have the Barons 930# spring in and still with a good dip will smack the saddle bag frame to the belt guard.(have since put spacers in to move the frame out a bit). And that's riding solo.

I just have to ask...what kind of hitch did you get and where. This is something I have considered for a while now.

ThuleMan,
Being the cheap SOB that I am, I made my own. I had been looking at about three different styles/designs, studying them, figuring out which would be the easiest to make, and this is the one I decied to copy;

http://www.dauntlessmotors.com/hitch-pages/yamaha.htm

Click on the link and scroll down to near the bottom of the page for pics, description and pricing. I modified mine slightly from this exact design, but it's essentially the same. Since I was in kind of a hurry to get mine completed, I didn't take any pics of it, but if you'd like I can take some and post them.

And to be honest, I can't take all the credit for making my hitch... I had quite a bit of help from a few co-workers with welding, fabricating and in general, just being there to lend a hand.

If making your own hitch isn't an option, and the $295 price tag is too steep (I know it is for me!!), here's an email address (and his reply to me) to another source.

gcourtem@shaw.ca

Hi Aaron, Yes I do manufacture trailer hitch for the RoadStar, the retail is $199.95 plus shipping (I would need your address in order to quote you on the shipping).

I included a copy of the cd-rom instructions so you could see the hitch and know how in mount on the bike.

Thanks, Gilbert
GC Manufacturing

Hope this helps and ride safe!!

Aaron

I have the progressive and like it. I am however going to take out my lowering dogbones. Two up I keep bottoming out (I'm 235 and wife 120) on all the twisty bumpy roads around here. Doesn't seem to hurt that much on the lean angle but decent bumps and it bottoms on the frame.

I got my progressive from PCS.

Aaron & Dmfarms,
I'm a "big" boy and ride 2 up sometimes so I got the progressive spring and I don't notice a big difference between solo ride anda 2 up with my 130# boy I also put the progressive springs on the front too BIG difference there also... If they are about the same price I would definately go with the progressive you get more spring for the buck. Add a little chrome dodad to your order to get it up to $99 and Phats has free shipping
