I don't know anyone who is real guru when it comes to belts Paul.

Is it chirping, or whirring?

If it's chirping I found that the belt is a little loose. If you ride two up and have any weight to you it'll loosen the belt.

I've seen posts about "chirping" belts. By "chirping" do you mean the rapid chirp sound I'm getting around 60mph? I thought it was my fender squeaking from a loose bolt or something, or even the baffles in my Longshots rattling. Maybe it's just the belt?

My Midnight Star only has 200 miles on it so far. Do new belts "stretch" during these initial miles? Also, I don't have a belt tension guage, like the manual suggests. Are there any other good ways to check the belt tightness?

So many questions, and so little time.....

Belts that exhibit "chirping" typically do it during deceleration. It is usually caused by either the belt being too loose (and old) and potentially by the rubbing on the plastic bumps or guides in the front pulley assembly. Some folks have removed the plastic guides to reduce the problem, others have replaced their belts with ones that are egnineered not to have the problem (like the Dayco Panther belt). The reason it is most prevelant during decel is becuse decel operations cause the belt slack to build up on the high and forward sides of the front pulley.

You should not be having this problem on a bike as new as yours is. Not saying you don't, just saying you shouldn't. If it is most prevelant on decel, you might have the problem.
