I've been oversprayed... Please Help!!!! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Hello all,
I went to my storage unit today, to get my Star ready to take a 4th of July cruise to Sebring...
So, I open the door to my storage unit and there's my beautiful Star just the way I put her away last Sunday, (Of course, after I washed her and detailed her and...)
But, wait a minute... It's really dusty....
So, I wheel her out into the daylight, get out my polish cloths.... and give her a wipe down and WHAT THE...?!?
It's OVERSPRAY!!! ARG!!!
Now, I managed to cut through some of it on the hard bags... (See the second picture...)
And, I'll probably "GreyBar" the rest of the bike...
But...
What do I do about the Windshield...
Is it Toast? Do I need to call my insurance agent?? Do I shoot the guy next dor??? (Well, I know the answer to that one...)
But what about the windhield?
What can I use on it...

Saddle Bags

This is the passenger seat...

Thie is the view through the windshield...

I think this is some kind of industrial enamel...
Any help would be appriciated...!

Bob.

For the windshield:
WD40 and a squeegie or razor blade (nice and easy).
If it's etched the plastic, see your insurance guy (and beat the guy next door).

For the paint:
Clay Bar or McGuire's Cleaner Wax. Slightly more abrasive than wax, but not much more.

Think about investing in a cover...

You can remove it from the bike with polishing compound .... just don't rub too hard as the clear is very thin.

Bad news for the windshield ... I have not found anything to remove paint overspray from the shield without damaging the coating.

I will tell you how to fix it. Get the storage units management to replace it and they will charge the idiot responsible. There are city ordinances against using storage units for such things, especially when it involves doing work that by law is regulated by the EPA. By law, there must be an exhaust fan with filtering system to do spray paint work. I would sue for a new paint job and any accessories that were over sprayed. If it is an acrylic type enamel, you can forget about that windshield because anything that will melt the paint, will also melt the plastic windshield. I am sure the storage unit facility has rules against doing work like this in the storage units and I would bet the city certainly has ordinances against it, not to mention the EPA.

Coated windshields are amazingly fragile. You might try a soft cloth moistened with some water and toothpaste (not kidding) on a small area at the bottom. We used to use toothpaste by the carton in the military although the material is NOT the same it's the only other thing I can think of that won't cut right thru the coating. It's very minimally abrasive but can clean such things.

Thanks, I figured the windshield was toast! (but I'll try the WD 40 trick...Hey, what do I have to loose...)
I've already been to the dealer and if I want to replace "just the plastic" that's $125.00... (not including the time to unassemble and re-assemble it... (Of course, I could do it myself... But for the insurance point of view...)
The gu wo ownes the warehouse complex was very "as-a-matter-of-fact" about the whole thing... he said he would call the renter... But I haven't heard anything today... (I think he'll get a little more interested when code enforcement shows up tomorrow...)

If I were you I'd try rubbing it with blood from the sprayers nose. It might not remove it, but you sure as hell might feel better.

Another way might be to remove the paint from your windshield with the sprayers face. If that doesn't work, you could try the opposite and remove the sprayers face with your windshield. If neither of those work, you can try inserting his spray gun in a body cavity of his of your choice by use of a sledge hammer.

Seriously, I know A guy that I use for detailing my aircraft and he does fantastic work. I just had him salvage a windshield that belongs to one of my bros. My bro wanted to save it if he could because it was engraved. It had some pretty deep scratches on it from a lay down, but he got them all out. I am sure the coating is not on there anymore but heck, you can't tell it anyway. He was pleased with the results. I will ask him about getting paint off. I will call him right now, stand by.
