I must say, I agree with Shamrock on this... Morally, we should take care of our country first and foremost before we spend so much on other countries... I was in the military and I have been to foreign countries... I have seen first hand the hatred even our "allies" have for us... 90% of the other countries dont like us because of our "morals" or because we are "arrogant" or dont believe in their religious beliefs... it goes on and on why they dont like us... but our government doesnt seem to care that we will never get repaid... our government that we vote into office doesnt even care about the people that have voted them into office to take care of our communities and our troops in our military... just take a look at what happened with the limited supply of bullet proof jackets in Iraq... took them way too long to get that issue fixed... but they will send out all this money, military and resources in one day to a country that nobody really cared about before the earthquake...

In my opinion, we need to do a lot of soul searching before we vote in our politicians... this is where it starts... because our country is too busy, or too lazy to get to the poles to vote in the "right person for the job" we all get screwed... and this is how we get screwed is with situations like Haiti... I could go on and on, but will refrain... that is my opinion, and we all know about those!!

You adopted a child you had never met before and does not share your dna? Why would you do that if don't believe in helping strangers?

A gentleman above just asked for your prayers for his son. I dont imagine that will strike a chord with you seeing as how he's stranger too, family first right?

And to that gentleman i say god bless you and your family and i will pray for quick and safe return.

For your information the mother of this child is my aunt...I didn't want to put my family biz out there like that but there it is. So yes I do share DNA with the little guy. Since you are so much for helping strangers first I think you need to sell your home and family vehicles, put your family in a shelter and take public transportation and give the proceeds to the Haitian people. Strangers before family right...ridiculous! I can't beleive I am even having this discussion. May God bless you and your family. I see where this thread is going and this will be my last comment here. Thanks to all that commented here!

Read back: i never once said strangers before family. that was your misunderstanding.

Lastly: Mr. Shamrock i humbly apologize for forcing your hand with regard to sharing personal issues that you weren't comfortable with. you've done a wonderful thing for that little boy.

Isn't it great to live in a country that is blessed with freedom. Freedom to choose to work or not, freedom to choose to help those we choose to. Freedom to speak our minds and opinions without fear of arrest! Freedom to disagree! And having traveled around the world for many years in the military I have learned that we as American are the most charitable people in the world. And through our charity we influence the world in a positive way. We may not see the fruits of our generosity but we hope our children and grandchildren will. Agreed, we must start at home with our charity but some choose to help outside the home or in this case outside the country. We control what our leaders decide by VOTING!! Remember if you are unhappy with their choices, organize and voted them out of office on the next round. Thank you to those that support others by whatever means they have, money, time, food, clothing, or prayer!

my 2cents!!

To all those who have replied to this thread, I am a proud person of Haitian decent living in Canada.I have had the the honour of growing up in North America where I am free to speak my mind, vote for whomever I see fit, and generally living a pretty blessed life. Along with all my family members living in various parts of the U.S, I am relieved to learn that all but 2 family members in Haiti hae been accounted for and safe. One has parished as her home fell on her,in her 90's, and my uncle is still missing. All politics aside, I don't give a rat's a** how he makes it out alive, but I'll shake the first soldier, volunteer, HUMANITARIAN that comes to his aid and all my other family members who are going to need food and water soon regardless of what country they were sent from !!

Well said CHANCE. In spite of the undeserved accusatory tones running in this thread, please know our hearts are with you and your family, and with all the Haitians trying to survive in this terrible disaster. Some are able to help more than others. We're all involved with our personal priorities, none any better than another. One of the greatest attributes of America is its willingness to offer aid to other countries unselfishly with no expectation of repayment. Our thoughts and prayers (and whatever else we're able to offer) are with the Haiti people.
