Man, I'm really finding this thread very interesting. Living in the great state of california (also known as the granola state-filled with nuts and flakes) or the "can't" state - can't carry a personal firearm, can't ride my motorcycle without a helmet, etc etc.
I know very little about firearms and carry permits, so i have a couple questions. I've been following this thread with much interest and had to look up these different sidearms you all have and the different holsters etc. For those of you living in the "good states" where you can carry, are there some states that allow only concealed and some only open carry? Or can you choose? If you had a choice, which is better?
I guess us law abiding citizens here in CA are too lame to make personal choices for ourselves, so we have to walk around completely vulnerable against a segment of the not so law abiding citizens (also known as criminals and thugs).
Any input and shedding of light on this would be very appreciated.

Every state has its own rules when it comes to carrying. It's up to you to know them. Here in MN they don't just hand out permits to anyone. You have to pass a knowledge and skills class and then apply to your county sheriff, and nothing is free. Usually about $250 between the class and app. Now that we have reciprocity in WI it's worth getting. I live right on the border and my girlfriend lives in WI.

Thanks for the insight everyone! Now if I could just get this friggin shotgun zeroed for deer hunting this weekend!

Just picked up a Ruger LCP (.380 ACP) today along with a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster. Been carrying a Glock 27 on the ankle but even with it's subcompact size, it still felt bulky. The LCP will carry well, even while on the bike.

+1 on SOB holster. My choice if I am wearing jeans. WOC is old school - Colt Cobra (w/ antique ivory stocks) w/ Buffalo Bore low pressure .38 spl.

Summer I'm in cargo shorts and WOC is .380 Beretta in the pocket holster with 90gr JHP Federal Hyrda Shoks.

Remember, cops carry a gun to protect THEMSELVES, not YOU!

Also, be sure and check state laws when traveling across borders. Most states have different statutes when it comes to firearms, concealed/unconcealed, etc. In some places, you might be better off legally with a shotgun mounted to the handlebars than a pistol in an ankle holster in your boot.

My Glock is always ready.

+ infinity!
You can get you butt in a sling REAL fast going into a place like MA or NY or NJ or MD with a concealed firearm and is some cases with ANY firearm!
I personally know of some guys from PA who were going to Maine for a hunt and were stopped in MA with rifles locked in a case in their trunk! Nights in jail, thousands of dollars in legal bills and they still ended up with a illegal transportation conviction.
There have been several high profile arrests for this in NY recently.

I just recently bought a Blackhawk Serpa concealment holster for my.40cal. It is a paddle style or belt style convertable either way. It holds the weapon out to the side enough that when you sit it dont rub into your side. And has an index finger quick release. Got it at Academy. It is high resin and sturdy. Im pleased with it. It is also adjustable to rotate it forward or to the rear.

They needed a better lawyer...the FEDERAL Firearm Owners Protection Act...Safe Passage Provision...allows them to legally do just what you describe! They should file a Civil Rights lawsuit.
