Unlocking Sprint phone. 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I have T-Mobile and My wife is with Sprint, and Sprint SUCKS! Anyway, she has a Galaxy S-2 and we have been told it is a huge pain in the ass to "unlock" a Sprint phone. She wants to bail on Sprint and go on my T-Mobile plan and be able to use her phone. Any of you guys or gals phone techies???

Cant be done. Sprint uses CMDA cell tower technology. Does not use a SIM card. T-Mobile uses GSM tower technology and requires a SIM card. Both companies use different radio frequencies for data, voice and sms connections. Better off just selling the phone on craigslist and buying something else. Even though the Galaxy S2 is two generations old at this point, you can still make a few bucks back off of it. Depending on the amount of minutes and data you guys use, you could save a TON of money by going prepaid. Once my contract is up with Sprint, I am switching to Straight Talk. Phone contracts are such BS. You wind up paying so much more money for the phone because the carrier is subsidising the price. Wind up paying $1200 or more for the handset.

Sprint phones are not compatible with T-mobile Mark, at least as far as I know. They use different transmission protocols. Sprint is a PCS network instead of conventional Cellular.

She would need a GSM (At&t or T-mobile) phone. Google is selling their new Nexus 4 pretty cheap right now (199/249). Its what I use and it is sold unlocked and no contract. Just a thought.

That is what I did. On a T-mobile $30 per month plan. It has limited minutes, but on the months when I have gone over it never ran me more than about $50.

I have Virgin Mobile with an LG Optimus Elite. Got the $35/month, 300 minutes, unlimited everything else plan. Only thing I don't like is if you're out of tower range you're SOL. My wife has a buy minutes plan with the double the minutes for life. All hers does is act like a phone. However her dropped calls are few and far between. Mine? Considering going to Straight Talk.

I forgot how difficult cell phone usage is in the US.

All of our phones over here are unlocked to do anything and everything we please with them. I'd suggest buying the same phone from over here, but then that phone usage might be illegal in the US now -- or North American service providers wouldn't be able to configure it properly for their services. What a mess.
