Sorry, Hotelfox. Thanks for the reassurance, though. (And to Patrick, too) Hopefully, you get your issues sorted soon. Good luck!

One of the reasons the nut on the starter clutch loosens it due to a backfire just as before the piston hits TDC on shutdown. This causes the engine to 'reverse' which in turn loosens the nut.

Doesn't happen all the time.

This thread discusses the Content article: Fixing the Starter Spin Problem

I beleive I am a candidate for the Dreaded Starter. I just cost 2000$ to fix my starter problem and it has failed again. It is now the 3rd time that
the starter has failed. I am a little worried. The bike was running fine (19 000 km on it so far) until I had a recall done on it about a part on the transmission system and since then, it has only been a headache. I was told that the recall procedure from yamaha might have been wrong ( the procedure does not remove the starter to perform the fix ) and thus to fix the problem properly, you have to remove the starter. They charged me big bucks (1960$) claiming that they have to redo part of the same work done by the recall in order to fix it properly. I am not the mechanical type and my dealer is usually doing a very good job and has some very good references. I will be checking with them but I was wondering if someone in the Montreal area is familliar with the article to give me a hand about fixing this for good. I don't mind playing in my bike if I can have someone with experience to help me with the project in case the dealer comes up with no fix.

listen if you need help give me a yell in PM, I will give you my phone number and talk you through it if you need. Its not that bad, I am BACK ON THE ROAD THIS MORNING!!

I am about to embark on this project. I have my Loctite 603 (thanks Patrick) and all the other bits. Can the 603 be used instead of the red Loctite mentioned on the parts list?

Dude did I here you right that the stealer charged you $2000.00 to fix ? To rebuild should only be about $175.00. To R/R with anew one should only be about $400.00 with labor. I would have a talk with them for sure especially if it is still doing it. They owe you big time man.

Yes ... that will work fine ... if not better.

The most important part is the lapping and if properly done you don't need Loctite.

I would not. If you use it on fasteners, you will need heat to soften it up.

Can you not get 243 or less?

Only joking Doc. I usually use 243 (blue Loctite). I will however use the 603 on all the parts that require loctite for the starter fix. Cheers for your help.
