from map:

did you feel you had any less power after performing stag 1 (or 2) on your pipes?

to map: and jdoza:

i did the stage 1 and ran it for about two months, i didnt like the fluffing sound that came with that mod, so i went ahead and as always said what the hell and removed the pipes and took the headers off and used 3 pieces 3'-- 3/8" rebar to beat out all of the guts.

the reson it takes 3 pieces is you will get one or two of them stuck in there a couple of times during the process' it took 4.5 hors to mangle the metal enough to remove it.

hint, take a 2.5" hole saw and cut out the whole cone and second plate and then beat the bigest tube in each pipe loose first and the worry about the rest.

also if you hit your hand as i did with a 4 pound hammer just suck it up, or just have a big swig of rum like i did. come to think of it that might of been why i hit my hand in the first place.

as far as the performance go's i already had problems with the sticy valve problem before hand, but i self ported the intake manifold and i did adjust my pms on the carb. 4 turns out before the bikes performance was increased. each bike is different so, adjust yours as needed.

if you do gut them i would tell you that, i would really port that manifold!!!

by the looks of things you really need a back tire first.

if you dont want to see the 8 holes then measure the inside of your tail pipes, i think its 2.5" or 3" i cant quite remember but get a metal hole saw and cut out that plate and dont worry about painting it afterwards, it will get black on its own.

by cutting them out they look really nice i think anyways.

as far as the popping as doc shadow says, get your self a cheap spray bottle and a bottle of marval mistory oil and take off the air cleaner and run the bike preferably after the bike is warm and keep the bike running and srpay the m.m.oil into the carb. as fast as you can untill the engine dies.

leave the bike sit for a day or two and fire it up like normal and wate for the smke to clear.

if you do this it is rec. that you change the oil after a short ride.

it made a big difference with my bike but i just need to re jet now i think

My bike is the Candy Red 06 in the sig pic. I was asking about the complete gutting of the stock pipes. I did Stage 3 no prob, started on the complete gutting and got stuck... I pushed all of the baffle walls forward after popping the welds and can't figure how to pull all of the stuff out.

Post edited by: JDoza, at: 2006/09/04 20:05

to get everything out your going to have to take a hole saw as close as you can to the inside off the cone as possible, and then break the big tube loose from the center retaining metal in there. then take a piece of that 3'--3/8" rebar and shove it in the header side and beat all of it out and swear at it, it seems to help me!!!

sorry about the missunderstanding man.

ok map: you need the back tire first!!!

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2006/09/04 20:19

It's just the way the pic looks (of my rear tire). It's still like new only 2700 km on bike. I'm to scared to smoke my tire. Did that with my 2002 v-star with cobra pipes. Had all the nieghbors out after that garage episode.

Hello newly added to the site, have been reading and playing much to my wifes dismay. Bought a used 03 Roadstar Midnight in Sep and have put 3000 kms since. Had K&N, AIS removed, and other mods done to which I am unsure. Bought a Jet Kit and drilled a few holes in the pipes and then a few more, and then some more a little farther in on the pipes and now voila. Slash cut on a 30 degree angle on a horizontal band saw. The bike sounds awesome I can really hear the V-Twin breathing now, I however am wondering how to completely remove the baffle to clean up the appearance and then slide it back in as I think it will be too loud if I don't.

Post edited by: Teeper, at: 2006/11/15 21:34

Welcome Teeper
Can't help you with the exhaust but there is a tranny recall on your bike. You need to make sure it was done or you need to get it done. If you go to a dealer and give them your VIN# they can tell you if it's been done or not. You can find out quite a bit about it here.

I have said this many times

The sound is nice from opening up the muffler .. especially when you go stage 3
However you have just untuned a well tuned muffler and you still are stuck with
restricted head pipes You may not notice much of a difference from stock in performance but when I was swapping stage 3 back and forth with my Cobra complete exhaust.... the stage three was noticably more sluggish.. carb and air left stock
and no adjustment
The Cobra classic exhaust made the bike a whole lot peppier with nice sound and the Megacone was that much better again...
Kinda regret doin stage 3
because.. now I have two loud systems... one beautifully tuned and the other miserably untuned
I could have had a tuned quiet and a tuned loud ...sittin here wondering how to reverse stage 3...
