$400.00 mistake 3 Years, 3 Months ago
This Saturday I made a $400.00 mistake. I went to a local sports bar in Sacramento Ca. with a couple other bikes. The bike parking is on a slope and not very big.WELL there are three handicap parking spots right next to the Bike parking.YOU GOT It.$400.00 for"Disabled space parked in crosshatch line". My Front tire was in the white crosshatch lines that seperated the disabled parking and the bike parking.
As I was informed after the officer wrote the ticket that area is to help the disabled get in and out of there cars.
I can understand I was in the wrong but why did she come in to look us up AFTER she wrote the ticket.I would have found it when we came out.
BEWARE with the tight times the states are seeing I feel there will be more tickets then warnings to help them out.

I hear ya Rudedog. I got the same kind of tickets (yes two, for me and my son's bikes) in Hunting Beach ,Ca. We parked in some crosshatched white lines to go in and get some Tacos from Wahoos. We come out and there is a ticket on each bike. Well those tacos wound up costing us $150.00.

I even fought it by taking pictures of oil spots that are there and pictures of other bikes parking there all the time. Well they call these lines "gore points" and always means NO-PARKING. Even though there was a regular curb there with no paint and there was no sign posted either.

Hey I guess we learn the hard way sometimes.

rudedogg, did the officer go in to have you guys move the bikes to clear the way? You never know, maybe someone called in to complain and they actually dispatched an officer to check it out.

no, all three handicap stalls were empty. The owner said they patrol that area on weekends . he said its easy money for them.He has tried to move his bike parking three times to other places and planning commision has turned him down all times. He said the kicker is the last stall was bike parking two weeks earlier but he restriped the lot to meet 2010 ADA codes

Seems like bikes are fair game when it comes to getting the quota up and raising much needed revenue. I can understand how you'd be ticked off.

Can this happen in like say, a Walmart lot? I often park in the hatched areas at the end of the row - as do all the bikers in this area it seems. Never have had a problem.
I would hate to get an expensive ticket like that though, and I feel for you guys.

They do give tickets for this in Nashville Indiana; there were six of us there and three parked in a cross hatched area and found tickets on the bikes when we returned.

Yep. This was the first thing that came to my mind, because that's usually where I park, too. Anyway... If I get a ticket for it, I get a ticket for it.

Whatever happened to reasonable fines? $400 for what amounts to a parking ticket? That's what I'd call cruel and unusual punishment.

And it's one thing if you've got your whole bike taking up the space, but the LEO writing a ticket for a front wheel in the restricted space is overkill. Don't get me wrong I support those men and women out there who are paid to take a bullet for me, but I abhor making them revenue agents.

I'd be mightily ticked off.

Word to the wise for me. I'll not be parking anywhere that isn't a properly marked space from now on. My $400 could be put to better use.

Thanks for the tale of woe. Maybe you just saved the rest of us from having this same experience.

It would seem to me that if making the space accessible for the handicapped was the focus of the officer's attention, he/she would have tracked you down and made you move the bike right then. Not doing so leads me to believe that state $$$ was the focus.
