If I were to do this, I would do it how FATBIKE has done it. Cooler air is better for the engine and power, putting holes in the back will draw warm engine air in. A lot like the stock box does. Drilling in the back would work, but not the optimal way to go. As for rain ... yeah, that is a concern for a paper filter, maybe get a K&N to replace the stock one. Also remember you will get more intake sound with this mod, or any quality air intake system.
