Oil Change Question 4 Years, 11 Months ago
After reading both oil change articles there seems to be a discrepancy. One says add oil in where the dipstick is (the one on the bike, not the one doing the oil change). The other article states adding oil directly to the crankcase by removing a bolt behind the rear cylinder.

???????

You can do it either way .....the fill behind the rear jug does not require stirring the engine to get a good level is my understanding...in my opinion would be more accurate but a pain in the azz delivering the oil ......Coug

Yes you can do it either way but be aware that the crankcase bolt has been know to get stripped/cracked.

I took some advise from this web site and made the bike lift with the 2 x 8's made it a lot easier to get at the drain bolts. And I added oil at both points. If you doing it behind the rear cylinder you'll need a 10 mm hex and a long flexible funnel. Also went with Amsoil and she seems to like it!

My 1.0749 cents - It isn't worth ending up with hole in the case you can't seal up. I put the oil in the dipstick tube.

Ditto to what Musky said...why make it more difficult than it has to be? I mean, I guess I could also rejet my carb by taking the motor out and flipping it over, but...

I've always done the dipstick route--add half, put the dipstick back in, start the bike & let it run for 30 seconds, shut down, add the other half. Done.

Hold on there, you mean you do not have to pull the motor out and flip it over to rejet the Carb?

If you guys are serious I have to say I'm kinda surprised. I thought people here had more common sense. Pulling the motor and turning it over. Standing on you head. Why work so hard?? Just flip the entire bike over. It sits perfectly steady on the 3 points made by the seat and handlebars. No unbolting stuff or trying to balance on your head. See how easy it is. You just have to think these things through.
