problem 1 Year, 5 Months ago
Good day all. I am a owner of a 03 roadstar. The problem I am having is when the outside temperature is less than 40 degrees ( in 30s) my bike will backfire and miss so bad it wants to quit especially when I crack the throttle. As the engine warms this does not change. The RPM will drop so low at idle the bike will quit. This only happens when the outside temperature is below 40. Above 40 degrees it runs like a top (all good). When I start out with the outside temperature in the 30s it will buck and snort but as the outside temperature (not engine temperature)gets warm the bike will purr like a kitten. Please help, do not want to be a fair weather rider.

Any changes made to it (re-jet, pipes, air box, etc. or still stock)?

try turning out the pilot screw by 1/2 turn. Gas does not vaporize in cold temps, so large droplets of gas will not combust, sound like you need more gas in the pilot ckt for more gas to vaporize. It could take as much as 10, 15 miles for the bike to reach proper engine temps. in those ambient temps. Keep in mind, the carb is breathing in cold air so it's keeping the temps low for quite some time, and the carb heater is small and will do only so much in those ambient temps as well.

I didn't know that L.A. got that cold that often. I remember when I lived in S.F.,You would be lucky if it got below 50º. Good luck with the bike.

Check your exhaust pipes for air leaks the colder it is the more metal shrinks and can cause air leaks. If there are no air leaks you may need to do what Erbman said and tweak the PMS. BTW Ben

You might want to check to make sure your carb heater is hooked up and working also.
