Yeah thats what my exhaust looks like and sounds like. Under a load it gets louder. There isn't any cone on our bikes that I know of after looking at all pictures of new and older Road Stars. As far as being too loud back in the day in the late 1960's and 1970's I had a few bikes that ran just straight pipes basically wide open exhaust. Same thing on my old cars I had what we called dumps, that were welded on the exhaust at the point it would turn to go back therefore any time we were going to race or wanted to get loud all you had to do is get your 9/16 wrench and open them up, the more open they were the louder they got. I remember when driving my car or bikes in the neighborhood I could drive in such a way that they were not shaking any windows--it's the way you drive it. BTW I talked to a girl who was taking my order at J C Whitney and she told me she bought her husband (who went to work at 3.00am) some pipes in the catalog that adjusted the level of sound (they both rode Harleys) kinda like those old dumps that I had on my cars. But I just like the stock pipes because in my opinion they flow with the design of the bike. I'm not computer savy enough to post a picture of my bike (I've done some minor mod's) but know how to e-mail them. If you want my e-mail it is dmcclary@cfl.rr.com

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. Bought my '06 road* without a mile on it about a month ago and have been looking for things to add/modify since michigan is still in deep freeze mode. I wanted to thank everyone for their advice and feedback on drilling the stock exhaust, especially Yamahog7 for the videos it was the deciding factor for me. Have done stage one and I dont think I will go any further for the time being. I think it is a great improvement over the original stock sound. Only took me about an hour from start to finish and didn't cost a dime. I love the way the stock pipes look on the bike and am very happy I was able to keep them.
Thanks again!

Road_rash_218 , I'm not sure of the ins and outs of the fuel injection system that is being used on the 08 Roadies (congrats BTW) , but fuel injection is sensitive to its surroundings. I can tell you this , and others will surely chime in as well , that a buddy of mine put a full V&H system on his VTX1800 , and it ran fine. It ran BETTER though , once he forked out the 3 bills for the power commander to even out the FI. Doing a slight mod to the exhaust would probably be fine. Then again , it might not hurt to sit tight on the modding , let others jump in, and see their results. Couple a thoughts anyhow. BB

I drilled out my stock exhaust to stage one and loved the sound. Not so loud as to have the law chase you down unless you sit outside of church during services and rev it like na a**hole. Rode it that way for two years until I found a good deal on a set of Hard Chrome 3" staggered equalizers. The HKs were way to loud for my liking in their stock form so I had to modify the baffle cartridge and am very pleased wth the sound now except going up steep hills. Recently began thinking of putting the stage one modified stockers back on but after picking them up, I was reminded of how heavy they were. They have to weigh thrree times what the HK pipes weigh. I'm having a hard time convincing myself to put all that extra weight back on the bike.

As far as extra weight is concerned: I never notice a change in how the bike pulls, in it's quickness or it's speed when I put my wife on the back of mine. I gotta figure she weighs more that the exhaust. So if it were me I wouldn't worry about the weight. My .02 -

If you change anything with the intake or exhaust (or both) that makes the engine breath a little better you need to adjust the fuel to match. It doesn't matter whether you have a carb or injection.
A slight change might not make a noticable difference.I have a customer whose son had a boulevard and had the filter and exhaust replaced and the bike ran terrible. No one figred out what the problem was and the son got so frustrated that he just gave the bike to his father.
I rejetted the carb and it made a world of difference.
I have a friend with a road king which is injected. We made a few alterations and he took it to a guy with a dyno. One advantage of injection is that it can be adjusted while it is running. He came home with 12 more horsepower than when he left. He also got better mileage.

Thanks everyone. I apreciate your input on the matter of the exhaust mods on the injected '08. As it stands right now, i am in Iraq nearing the end of my tour. i should be home sometime in the next 2 months. That is when i will be buying my Roadie. I am still looking at doing the stage 3 mostly because it will sound alot better than the stock. I would go to an after market system, but i have yet to see one that looks better with the bags on than the stock system does to me. But in the mean time any further input about stage 3 on the '08 modle will be of great help to me. Maybe someone reading has done it to their '08 and can add from experience.
Thanks again,
RoadRash

Come home safely RR, thank you for your service.
You won't hear much about the 08's yet, they don't hit the stores for another month. I'm sure once they do there'll be a flurry of posts about them. Good luck with your purchase, you're gonna love it.
