1700 mile road trip....LOUD! rattle 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Well I got back from my vacation down to topsail island NC...I put just over 1700 miles on the roadie. The trip down there was great...bike ran just fine...average mpg was around 45. just as I rolled into Topsail I noticed a loud rattle that seems to be coming from the front of the bike when I hit around 2000rpm (guessing as I don't have a rev counter) I looked around the bike for the usual and didn’t find anything loose or hanging off and have determined that its coming from the front cylinder. Bike seems to be running fine other than the rattle….any ideas what it could be?
Thanks in advance.

check your headlight. It's dangerous, but if can reach forward and hold the headlight bezel and the rattle stops - that's where I would start. I've had to work on mine a few times. search the forum for headlight rattle you should find a few suggestions.

Ringo--

As MAP said, check the headlight. Just two days ago, I solved a loud rattle puzzle that has literally been driving me nuts for 3 months. I had even tried the headlight first, stuffing it full of non-flammable packing wrap, but the rattle was still there, so I have, over time, systematically removed everything that COULD have been the metallic rattle I was hearing.

About ready to give up & out of frustration, I went back to the headlight a couple of days ago and got the bright idea to remove the visor. That was the culprit ...not the headlight itself, but the little piece of Yami chrome I had added to it was buzzing & rattling like mad, even though it appeared to be firmly in place. The rattle is gone, I'm happy, and the visor might be on its way to eBay...

Ya, you'll find a few tech tips about wrapping the metal tabs of the headlight visor with electrical tape or similar padding (I've even heard of cork). Not a bad Idea to do even if you don't think it's making noise if you have it off... you might as well pad it. Keep in mind also if you have a windshield it will reflect sounds from the engine area that will make you think it's from the front end. ALWAYS check bolts with a new bike locktite it if it's loose to the touch - I lost a bolt from the windshield. Most bolts from factory are locktited (is that a word?) but anything you've messed with double check. I've lost a few from time to time because I didn't lock tite it or I thought, I may remove it so I'll locktite it later if I'm gonna keep it. ~Guido

Re:1700 mile road trip....LOUD! rattle 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I've been working on this problem since I got my bike in March. It just drives me crazy! I've tried the tape on the lip of the bowl, wrapping the wires, putting foam on the tabs that hold the light on, and all kinds of things. Just yesterday I decided to use some clear Silicone on the springs, retaining clips, and any where else I thought might be causing the problem. Well, the ride into work this morning was a quite one. I didn't hear anything. I figured if I used the silicone, it wouldn't take much to remove it if ever I had to change the bulb or whatever. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the last time I'll have to open it up again. If this doesn't finally solve the problem, I might go out and spend some $$$$ and replace them with good aftermarket lights.

Heh, I've gone through the same ordeal with the rattle from the headlight.. can pretty much guarantee that's it. So far I've used a silicone/glue on the spring, still rattled, so I did the same on either end of the angle adjustment screws, still rattles, next up I pull it all out and apart again and glue the visor. I'm thinking that should do it because I've had a suspicion as of late that that's been the culprit.

This is an obvious flaw with the RS* and many have had problems with it. Why doesn't Yamaha do anything about it?
