How hard could it be?..... 3 Years, 10 Months ago
Stopped into my local Yami shop today, I wanna put the Eibach 1000 on the roadie. They looked at me kinda stupid, than said thier not gonna touch it. Then they proceed to tell me they just did one last week and it took 5 hours.... plus they had to send the the shock and spring to a car dealership to finish putting it together. I've never did anything like that but is it really that hard to do if you have the tools? Or am I just dealing with a couple of..........Yami mechanics??

Thanks Vegas...curious, can you really tell the difference with the swap, when your two up or even just on crappy roads? Which seems to be about 75% of them here.

I just had dealer do my 930# Barons (made by Eibach) spring. He said it was his first and he charged me 2 hours.

I was thinking about the 1000#. Went with 930 and it's planty stiff. Makes huge difference. I'm 260 and wife is 180 so no way the stock spring was holding us up.

After installation, bike is noticably higher and definitely doesnt compress near as much when I/we get on bike.

Unless you have heavy bags, I would suggest the 930 or even progressive sprang.

I just put on the progressive spring and dropped it 2" with dog bones. I had never had it apart and it took about 30 minutes to get it off. I ran it over to a little mechanics shop, he put it in a strut compressor and 20 minutes later I was back under the bike putting things back together. That took about 20 minutes.

The progressive is nice, I like to looks of the lower rear end. It barely bumps on big bumps with 2up. Granted we are about 450 lbs combined.

I will try to update my sig pic in the next few days.

Blackroadie,
I just installed the Progressive spring last week. Haven't riden two-up yet, but by myself it's definitely a stiffer ride. I had to work the weekend so I haven't put too many miles on it yet, but hopefully that'll change tomorrow and I can get a better feel (literally!) for the bike and how it handles.

As for doing the job, it really wasn't as bad as I'd expected. I pulled the entire swingarm though and lubed the bearings while I had it that far apart. I also used a hydraulic press to compress the spring, which made things alot easier. I'm no expert mechanic, but on a scale of 1-10, ten being the hardest, I'd rate this job at about a 5 or 6. I think the trick here is having all the right tools on hand before starting the job.

Good luck!!

In The Wind,
Aaron

I went to one dealer who told me they had never switched out a spring before. I thought that was a bunch of bs. Went to the 2nd dealer and he looked at it for a couple minutes (like he too had also never done one) and decided he would do it for me. Charged me half an hour labor which came to $37.50. I also suggest checking out the tech article to do it yourself. I have the barons 930lb and have only ridden solo so far. It really gives the bike a more aggressive feel on the road.
