SHAG, Not to be a fly in the ointment on your helmet but...

Regardless of what you've been told I don't see how that helmet can be a bone fide DOT "approved" lid.

Standard for a DOT helmet require: S5.5 Projections. A helmet shall not have any rigid projections inside its shell. Rigid projections outside any helmet's shell shall be limited to those required for operation of essential accessories, and shall not protrude more than 0.20 inch (5 mm).

If the decoration is some sort of soft foamy plastic or something, maybe, but if it's metal(as it appears) it ain't DOT.

Just my .02

Nope ...... NOT METAL and (<5mm in thickness.

This is a "Daytona" D.O.T. Helmet, with the plastic 3D elements epoxied and hand painted. They are meant to give a metallic appearance, but they are not metal, nor are they made of a rigid material, as they are moulded around the helmet and are semi flexible to the touch. The company who makes this helmet also offers the same in novelty versions.
