I did the same thing years ago. You can do it. I never saw any rust at the cut on mine.

Whenever I work with exhaust pipes... at the opening, which is where your cut will be, and there will be raw metal... tape to the edge, and paint with some of that flat-black BBQ grille paint.

I've bought a number of Santee pipe sets off eBay when they used to be available, and would paint the inside of the tip area black each time, for a nice appearance.

I thought about the tubing cutter last night and a guy I work with might have one he's going to bring in

Once you expose the raw metal underneath it's only a matter of time before your finish goes south. There's a set of shorties in our area for $250.00us. Before trashing yours perhaps think of what the net cost may be - perhaps even breaking even or profiting from a buy/sell. Once cut they're yours.
The ones I'm going to cut have a cracked heat shield and ive tried to sell them for dirt cheap and also for free. I won't be out anything if I screw them up.

Nothing to lose then - the pipe-cutter idea was brilliant!

Be careful with a tubing cutter. The rollers (not the blade) may leave track marks on the uncut chrome. Tape it first with a very durable tape to protect the chrome from the rollers.

Re:Is it possible? 1 Month ago
I messed around with one of them today for a couple of hours and I think it's going to work. The final cut I made isn't quite square so I'm glad this one is just for practice. I used a band saw to make the cut and didn't double check it for square. Will I need to mess with the carb with these being shorter?
The piece in the back is what I cut off plus a couple more 1 in. pieces trying different methods of cutting.

I've been busy at work so I only have one done. We're supposed to get a bunch of rain this weekend so I hope to get the other one done then.
