Am I crazy? 3 Months ago
Well good news. As some of you may remember I posted about a year and a half ago that I might go to Jail for being unable to pay my child support. Finally now that matter is solved and the situation ended in my favor. I am finally in a position to get zeroed out on my outstanding child support debt. I originally was being charged about 500 dollars a month child support despite the fact that I was unable to work due to Karla's accident. I didn't bother to ask for a modification prior because My ex and I were supposed to modify the visitation arrangement and their would not be any child support. When it became obvious that she was not going to honor our agreement I went ahead and asked for a modification. In Iowa when you are not working for a legitimate reason the max child support they can get you for is 50 dollars a month and I had been getting charged 10 times that amount. Long story short I finally came to an agreement with the ex after 2 and a half years of fighting between ourselves and via lawyers. I now only owe 3200 dollars in back child support as opposed to the 15k I would have had she got her way. Thank you Jesus is all I can say. Well so obviously I want to get all that squared away so I don't get back into a negative situation. So Brings me to the actual point of this post. I have a Corvette as many of you are aware and I'm considering selling it because the money I get could pay off my child support and purchase a nice full dress touring bike for Karla and I to enjoy (probably a Royal Star Venture or mid 90's Goldwing). The thing that makes me wonder if I'm crazy is that previously I was under the belief that Karla would never be able to be on a motorcycle again but I have sense re-evaluated that belief. I'm still not sure though. Would it be reckless of me to put her on a motorcycle? Should I think about using a restraint device to make sure she would never fall off? I have no idea what to think or do and I would appreciate any and all thoughts opinions and ideas anyone might have to offer. Keep in mind I'm asking because I'm not sure about any of this so you don't need to bash me or make me feel bad about putting Karla in danger of another injury.

That's all great to hear. How much $upport did you provide the attorney? Hope it wasn't a wash.

As long as Karla has good sitting balance and doesn't startle easily, you should be OK. If she were to startle at a noise or visual event and jerk suddenly, she may throw you off balance. Especially if riding slow. Tell Karla to keep up her good, hard work.

I only had a lawyer for the contempt charge as that was a criminal charge. The modification of everything I was self represented. The Lawyer for the contempt charge was a public defender.

Im glad to hear shes doing good enough to consider riding again. As far as restraining her to the bike I don't think I would've wanted to be strapped onto my bike when I went down but maybe I'm not thinking correctly. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Make sure you get a bike that has a tour pak setup with the arm rests. I've seen one that has the riders backrest with the tour pak and she ain't goin nowhere. Good luck to you sir and may God Bless you.

She has good sitting balance. I didn't think a seatbelt type restraint would be good either but I thought I would ask. Yea I would like to get either a Yamaha Royal Star Venture which has the full touring pack or a mid 90's Goldwing which also has arm rests usually, or a Older Ultra Classic. Time will tell what will or will not happen. Thanks for the comments.

Would she have any trouble getting on and off the bike with your help? Hot pipes are always a concern. Does she have the strength to sit up right, like on a kitchen chair, without support?
I think you're on the right track with some sort of wrap around arm rest. I've even seen arm rest just on a u shaped bar, that fastened to the sissy bar. He was/is a member here, who's name is Jonathon. It had a lot lighter visual look, then the tour pack.
Have you talked to her about it, to see if she is comfortable with the idea? Would she be doing it just to make you happy?
Personally, I think the stimulation thing, sight, smell, wind etc., would be so good for her in so many ways, but only if she felt secure. It might get a lot of connections working again that may just be dormant now.

I'm very happy you've managed to get out in front of the child support thing.

She seems very enthusiastic about being on a motorcycle. I wouldn't do anything w/o asking her her opinion. I guess what I need to do is find one of these bikes and actually get her on it and see if she can tolerate it. I would definitely have to help her on and off the bike. Most of these touring bikes have their pipes hidden by the bags and what not so it would be a lookout but not a major concern. Oh yes absolutely she has excellent upper body and leg strength. It's her lack of stability in her knee and EQ that is out of whack. If she was sitting on a open stool and you would push her she would not fall. One of the therapy things we do is having her sit on one of those giant rubber balls and have her kinda rotate around in circles on it. She does very well. The majority of what keeps her from being home alone now is her lack of common sense or street smarts. She forgets things you tell her after about a week sometimes, she can't eat w/o risk of choking so she must have someone with her when she's eating and other things. Wish i could post a video for you all to see. She really is doing far better than the Dr.s had ever thought. And she is doing as well as I knew she could.
