This thing runs perfect. It started this right after the head was pulled. I bought a aftermarket head gasket. I've even wondered if maybe it was thicker than the original.
I assume I messed up a lifter or pushrod when I didn't get them in right or just mixed up the pushrods but from what I read they are the same length for the front cylinder on a 1700

I did the roll the pushrod on a plate of glass trick to see if it was bent. Next time I have it out I'll chuck it in my lathe and run the indicator over it to see if its straight.

My 2¢

If it injested a screw and the piston trapped it against an open valve it could have tweaked the rocker arm and you could now have an excess of clearance on that one valve stem.

Something that could be adjusted out by setting both valves on that rocker back to zero clearance.

That needs some serious thought. I keep thinking I trashed a lifter but it could have been the rocker as you say.
Ill sure enough look into this when I pull the rockers next time.
