Does this cover dealers too? If someone filled out a written complaint to the dealer are they required to pass it on to Yami? Or should people put everything in writting directly to Yamaha. And is there anyway for people to follow up on their complaint to see if it the NHTSA was notified of it? This is great info. Thanks!

Re:SVS and the NHTSA 4 Months, 1 Week ago
In our case Musky, the dealer had to submit the warranty claim to us for disposition. Since we got a copy of it, yes it went on the report. I can not attest to how Yamaha and their dealers handle the warranty. Copies of the reports are not generally available to the public. I assume it would lead to the reports being used in the wrong way in the market place. Now if there is a "problem" determined by the NHTSA, those are published. If there is a recall mandated, or one inacted on a voluntary basis, I believe those are published on their website. I do not know the exact criteria for them to determine there is a wide spread problem. It would depend on how many were produced and how many problems were reported. I will give you an example. I have a part number we produce about 600,000 per year of that goes on class A trucks and trailers. We have a warranty rate of about 14 per year. we get notice of around 100 per year, but most of those are determined to not be warranty items due to abuse or other reasons. We only have to report the 14. for 14 out of 600,000, they dont even bat an eye. So for the SVS to be a "Safety" issue. There would have to be alot reported to move the needle. I would make the complaints directly to the NTHSA. If its made to Yamaha, and they determine that the fault is in the owner. For what ever reason. It does not get reported to the NHTSA on the quarterly report. Another way a manufacture gets around it... they do not approve the warranty.. for say... customer rejetted, thus causing the carbon build up. But they fix it under a "customer accomodation". Just to keep the customer happy. It would not get reported either.

Keep in mind these are just examples. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW OR WHAT YAMAHA DOES IN THESE MATTERS. So please do not assume that they are side stepping any issues based on my observations of the NHTSA system.

No problem. I'm not assumming anything about Yami. This is why I think it's a good idea to report it directly to the NHTSA as a safety concern even if you haven't had it. It's like the 1600 tanny circlip. Just because yours hasn't went bad doesn't mean it can't or won't. And if it goes bad at the wrong time....... If enough people write in maybe the NHTSA will start looking deeper into what's going on. Or not. But it only takes a couple minutes to do so worth a shot.

Law,

I just went back to look up this thread and was very surprised reading all the postings. I apologize if you took any offence to my post. I re-read it and I guess it could have come across wrong. That was in no way my intention.

I'm relatively new here. I'm still feeling my way around. I've followed your problem and I really do feel bad for you. I actually like hearing any followups you give. I'm here to learn from everyone and I can learn from your unfortunate circumstances.

I just thought it was great finding out that there was a site to report these types of things to, instead of the dealer or Yami.

I was also just complimenting Musky (so sucinct and to the point) (was that spelled right??)

Had to get that off my chest. Good luck to you Law.

Flash, I think alot is lost in translation over the web, but there is no hard feelings and I'm truly not upset. God is good and Life is too short to sweat the little stuff. Like I said I love this site and all the people that take the time to chime in. Participation is what makes this site so great! It would suck to post something and get NO feedback. I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason and mabye I was ment to take a year off from riding. It's hard but theres nothing I can do about it. Just have to look at the bright side of things.

Maybe. Just remember the job of the NHTSA is to help insure safety of vehicles. They are not really there for defects thats do not warrant a safety issue. I think its debatable if SVS is a safety issue or just a pain in the butt. Make sure you continue to file the complaints with Yamaha as well. It would be interesting to see there have been accidents attributed to SVS. If there have been, they will act quickly. If there have not been, they probably wont.
