New Rider in the works 3 Years, 10 Months ago
My son (15 years old) has just gotten his drivers permit for a class C license. He's been asking me a lot of questions about riding a motorcycle and thinking he want's to ride also. One of the questions he's asked me made me think for a moment. He asked, "What is the most dangerious thing you need to look out for when riding a motorcycle?" I thought for a moment and then took him outside in the front yard. I told him to look around, look at EVERYTHING he can possible see. My answer to him was, "Everything you see and everything you can't see are your enimies while on a bike, you need to be aware of ALL your surroundings because any of these may be the cause of you going down. You just never know so it's better to be fully alert!"

Anyone else given a new rider advice? And if so, what did you tell them?

You prety much summed it up. As you are driving with him. have him point things out. Like see that car with the 20 diffrent colors in scratches on the bumper.. how much you want to bet that they wouldn't see you if you were on the bike.

Best advice I was ever given was it is your responisibility to be seen.

Also in my state (wa) you have to take the MSF course if you are under 18. best rule ever.

Years ago someone told me "Ride like your invisible, don't ever assume the cages see you".

That has saved me a few times.

I had it put to me as "ride like you're invisible and assume that any cager who does see you is out to get you."

Keep a cusion from the car if front of you and don't be afraid to use the horn. Adjust the bike to fit you and practice balance. Anyone can go fast but how do you handle making those slow turns, feet on the pegs.

My 14 year old has been riding with me for almost a year now. I gave him the MSF course for his birthday last November and he passed with flying colors and has been a constant riding partner ever since. Spend a lot of time talking with them about do's and don'ts, monitor his progress carefully while you ride with him and lead when riding for a while until he gets the hang of it. And don't be afraid to pull his license if you ever catch him showing off. My son knows he will lose his privileges as soon as I see him acting up on his bike. Other than that, be safe and you will have a ball with your son. We have been on a few trips together; he even doubles his mom while I double his younger brother when we ride locally.

Ride safe ...
