Tire Question 4 Months ago
|
|
|
I found a website to buy cheap tires but am a little confused as to which rear tire to order. I have a 99 roadie that is supposed to take 150-80B-16 tires or so I'm told but the Metzeler tire of that size in the ME 880 is 150-80HB-16. The difference is the "B" and the "HB" and I'm wondering what the difference is. I feel like a $125 shipped is a good price.

The B means it's a bias tire (vs R for radial) and the H is the speed rating (120 mph).

How many miles do you think I can expect out of this tire ? With proper inflation pressure of coarse) I have been through two sets of cheap Dunlops after using Metzlers exclusivly and I'm tired of having to buy a new set every year and especially since the Honda people bought the Yamaha dealership and are now charging 150 for a tire that used to cost about seventy five. Not only that, when the Honda people bought them out, their two best mech's went to the new Harley dealership and the guy over the service dept is about twenty two and hardly knows anything about motorcycles except for how to ride them I suppose. Heck, I used to let them change my oil even because I liked the service manager and he would give me free brake pads when I needed them.
Anyway, I had a flat a month or two ago and instead of buying from the dealership, I took my my wheel to an independent to order and change the tire. I told him that I wanted a mid range priced tire (didn't matter what kind) and I ended up with a Shinko on the front. I noticed right off the top that it would pull me into the curves and decided that I would never put another cheap dunlop tire on my bike.
So now I'm wanting to know how many miles I can expect out of the ME 880's?

I run metzler 880 whitewalls. I usually get 9-11K out of the rear and about 18-22K out of the front. I'm not sure what every one else is getting.

Wow, that sounds pretty good. I had dunlops for the last two sets and I havent' been getting anywhere near that. I don't even have 22K on my bike and I've been through four or five sets of tires. For one thing, I need to get on top of my tire inflation better but I would be tickled to death to get anywhere near that.

I have Dunlops front and rear. Currently I have 10K on the back tire but it needs to be replaced real soon. I agree Dunlops might not be top of the line tires but I can't complain about the service I've got from mine.

I put a Metzler 880 on the rear last year but only got 7,300 miles out of it. Loved the performance, didn't appreciate the durability.
I switched to Dunlop CruiseMax front and rear and, so far, love it! Performance is perfectly good for my style of riding and they pretty much look new still (about 5K on the rear and 8k on the front)
