No, I don't think you need to do that. I would have about a foot difference to make sure you have a good pressure differential.

If you set it using gas then you're OK. The only major thing to watch out for it making sure the float bowl is full. I once adjusted the float bowl with a semi-full bowl and couldn't figure out why my readings fluctuated.
