Mayday! (troubleshoot) 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago
So here's the deal. Just got back from a road trip (~2000 km) and on my last couple rides in the city I've noticed a howl that seems to be coming from the rear end. '08 Roadie, at 5700km now, only mod is a stage 1 exhaust aka I drilled the baffles out. The howl only occurs when its leaning (never when completely upright), and at 80 km/h (50? mph) if I lean harder and will howl even just weaving back and forth upwards of 90 (55). So... help? Belt is tight, I'm wondering if maybe its a wheel bearing? That'd make me pretty sad to see a bearing go with less than 6000k on it. Thanks guys.

Dan

Are you sure it's not your tires?

Check the air pressure of your tires...

Betcha it only happens when you lean left... Right? Uh, I mean is that correct?
When I was having tire troubles, I read somewhere... (maybe even here...) there was an observence, by a Star owner...
He wrote that when he leaned into a left turn he would feel a vibration and a hum... I've felt the same thing in my bike too... But, I can't call it a "howl" though...

No vibration, just a howl, sounds almost exaclty like the howl from when the differential bearing went in my truck... as for tire pressure, I last set it up just before my trip which I left on this past Friday (Aug 1). I set them at 38 front 41 rear, haven't checked them again since.. I'll look into it, but it does it to both sides.

Ranger mine started howling at around 8000km. In my case it is the front tire, Caused by cupping of the tread. Tire pressure has always been normal. I had same issue with my Goldwing and Concours.
That being said I would still have the rear end checked. My brothers venture also started howling shortly after he bought it. He went on a trip to Sudbury and it started. Rear wheel bearing was gone. Warranty repair.

Sounds like the rear tire to me......

When I bought my Roadie, it did the same thing. Riding in a straight line, it was quiet. Lean into a turn, right or left and the tire would start "singing". I thought it was a bad rear bearing or something was out of adjustment. Took it back to the dealer and they told me it was the tread pattern of the tire. Since I put the Metzler ME 880's on.... they don't "sing" anymore.....

Just my opinion..... ( and you know what the say about opinions.... )

I appreciate it gents, I'll be taking it in for them to look at it once I've got a day to myself.

I tend to agree with MikelJay. I have experianced that alot with dunlop tires and I wonder if it isn't more likey when and if the tire has a history of low pressure regardless of what the current pressure is. Once you run your tires at too low pressure it changes the wear pattern and if you've been doing that, chances are that putting the proper pressure in it is the reason. It may have a little more shoulder than it normally would have.
