Do you fill the transfer case in the same hole on the side? That looks tricky!

It has a drain bolt below the main fill plug. Drain it from there , then refill through the larger plug. A curved funnel helps. BB

Probably doesn't matter much, I suppose that if you do it immediatly after riding, any particles in there will be suspended in the oil so they would drain out as well..

I'm about to change mine in around 1/2 hour.
According to the service manual you are suppose to warm the bike up to operating temp.
Which brings about the question of how do you take off hot exhaust pipes
I know, very, very, carefully

do you have to take the pipes off to change the crank case oil? I think I can get mine without removing the pipes!

Depends on the pipes Chad, those short pipes Thom has looks like they hide the fill opening pretty well...

Don't confuse the transfer case with the crankcase. You don't need to warm up the bike to do the transfer case oil. Take the filler cap off. Then drain the oil out through the plug under the case. Then put the drain plug back in and add .42 qts of oil through the fill cap. Start the bike and let it run for a minute to see if you have any leaks. If you're lucky you won't have to take the pipes off to get the fill cap off.

You're right Musky (as usual ).
I did have to take my pipes off to get to the drain plug and fill hole.
Still with all that I still think it's easier then changing the motor oil.
