Gunhead,
My 06 will do that if I am riding around town for an extended period of time . It always goes away after about 4-5 miles of open road . I'm suspecting that it may have something to do with hotter engine and less oil into the upper end at lower RPMs around town.
I was paranoid as heck when I first got the bike, but thanks to this forum I think a bomb could go off under it now and I would just keep on ridin'

Pretty durable machines we've got. Not without their idiosyncrasies, but thankfully, not temperamental or too maintenance intensive for those of us who are not so mechanically inclined.

I'd bet its just valve noise, and as mentioned, nature of the beast... I've got an 08 and its got, I would assume, the same noise coming from the front. Louder at low rpm and open throttle because the pipes don't drown it out? Anyway, enjoy the ride!

Cowboys like us sure do have fun, racin the wind, chasin the sun. We\'ll take the long way around back to square one. Today we\'re just outlaws out on the run. There\'ll be no regrets, no worries and such, for cowboys like us.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the coil arcing sparks to the frame.

RangerDan, that sounds like what's going on with my bike, too. Yesterday, most of my riding was in the higher gears, and it didn't do it at all. (Eh... I'm still going to check my windshield bolts and such...) Heh..

Has anyone thought that the ticking might be the AIS system. My 07 1700 does it when I'm cruising around at low rpms. Sounds pretty junky to me but everyone that I have asked about it says theirs does it too. I'm not sure of the origin of the noise but it doesn't do it when the revs are a little higher.
