Re:Tricks up your sleeve thread 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I try to clean it when I come in from a ride, but cleaning it 14 times a week gets a little old.

About 5 x / week I lay a steaming hot wet towel over the windshield and leave it while I use showtime to clean everything else.

It takes about 4 minutes to clean the entire bike, then remove the towel, a quick wipe, no bugs, everythings clean, then a quick spray on the windshield with pledge.

I never use water, unless I'm going 60 and can't avoid it. Then I just air dry and clean up when I get home.

The no no about using Windex is the ammonia that it contains. Don't use anything on lexan or clear plastic containing ammonia.

Windex is safe on its own clear plastic bottle for sure...

Gotta admit, I was skeptical about Pledge, but had the day off today, and detailed the bike up nice and purty.....and I am amazed at the shine and polish!! Thanks for the tip guys!!! I'll see if tomorrow the bug come off the windshield more easily as well!~

Happy birthday to me! She looks like a NEW BIKE!!! It's officially the last one before the 40's set in next year.

Tanks for all you guys do to help out!

According to windex ammonia D MSDS, it has a PH of around 11. PH Scale goes 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral, 1 being highly acidic and 14 being highly base (alkaline). A PH of 11 is moderatly alkaline and in Lexan's literature it says avoid highly alkaline cleaners. Although a PH of 11 is not highly alkaline it is moderatly alkaline and therefore I would avoid it on polycarbonates. Lexan is a type of polycarbonate. There are differing opinons on using windex to clean Lexan. Some say it is okay. In general ammonia is highly alkaline and it should not be used on plastics. The higher the ammonia content the worse it will be for the plastic. It is possible that Windex does not contain alot of ammonia, but I will not risk my windshield to find out.

Pledge may work fine on the windscreen, but I prefer Plexus. Safe all round and besides, I like the smell!

The Sam Wise patent #3,463,735 lists several example formulae, one of which is 4.0% isopropyl alcohol (a highly volatile solvent) 1% ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (a less volatile solvent), 0.1% sodium laurel sulfate (a surfactant), 0.01% tetrasodium pyrophosphate (a water softener), 0.05% of 28% ammonia (added more for smell than for cleaning ability[citation needed]), 1% of a dye solution, and 0.01% perfume. This formula was not only significantly less expensive to manufacture, but allowed the product to be packaged in glass bottles and dispensed with a plastic sprayer.

SC Johnson acquired Windex in 1993 and has been manufacturing it since that time.

.05% of 28% ammonia

I second the Plexus. I use it on the shield and the tins. Shines up real nice.
