Broke down twice in 2500 miles 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I went to a parade this weekend with all my sick biker friends. A fellow bought a brand new 08 Harley anniversary edition, it is a beautiful copper color, but anyway, he's had it leave him on the side of the road twice now and he only has 2500 miles on it.
We saw two broken down bikes on the ride, yep both Harley's, I was one of the few that stopped to ask if I could help, I didn't get that either.
I can't figure out if there are just more Harley's out there, and hence the odds of seeing one broken down is greater or what the deal is. I am not bashing the brand, I just don't understand it.
I will say this, all the bikes in the parade were Harley's, I was the only non-Harley bike there, made me feel proud that I wasn't one of the herd.
Ride on Road Star brothers, ride on.....

My Brother In Law had his 07 fail to start when hot a couple of times. Dealer said "break-in" fuel and injection mapping is different from normal operation. Said computer has to be "re-flashed" at break-in service to change to the normal map. Sounds kind bull- to me, but would'nt put it past H-D. Besides, if this were a feature, the computer could be programmed to automatically change programs after the break-in period, so the Dealer would not have to be back in the picture. He also had a mirror fall off, lost part of the fairing, and the switch housings still come loose.

BTW, I mostly see "old school customs" shedding parts and broken down during parades.

Over the weekend I was at work at the bar, and these guys came in...asked about the Yama-Davidson in the parking lot....so the friendly biker banter began.

I said "oh, you mean the Yama-HA! Not to be confused with the overpriced, name brand manufacturer"...and he kind of chuckled..

He shot back with the typical harley response "Yeah, well I like to buy American, Im American Made."

I just said "me too, but I like to pay $10K less for a bike that won't be in the shop." Then his buddy started laughing and smacked him on the back. Apperantly his Harley was in the shop.

I love the banter, I am all for it, and I know for the most part 2-wheels is 2-wheels...but sometimes I just don't get the mentality.

Harley has come a long way. In my experience if you talk to the newer Harley owners IF their bike breaks down usually they have done some sort of modifications to the motor. The ones who ride it bone stock don't have any problems. I have a friend with a 06 Electria Glide that is bone stock. He has had several and ALWAYS modified them this one he decided to just leave it alone. He's got almost 50,000 trouble free miles so far and is astonished about it.
Dunno I don't think I could leave ANY bike alone and leave it stock

Yep, most of my friends ride HD's and ride them hard. We have been having 28 - 30 bikes on our ride every week and the vast majority are HD's. I havent seen one have a problem yet and several of them just got back from a 2900 mile round trip to south dakota. I think they are past the old days of problems. At least any more or less than the rest of the manufacutures.

Living in New Mexico there are some looong stretchs of highway with no services. The majority of broke bike on the sides of the road are HD. I stop and ask if they need help to my dismay they have already called a tow truck. Viva the Roadstar.
