I've been riding and racing dirtbikes for over 30 years, not to say that I know it all but just that I have been around alot of dirtbikes.
Anyway, there is no comparison between the cr 80 and a drz 125. The drz is a 7 or 8
hp bike that weighs 160-170 lbs and the cr 80 is a 20-22 hp bike that weighs 140. It is absolutely amazing how fast the 80cc motocrossers are. Any of them the yz80, Rm80, Kx80 or the cr80. I don't remember if you mentioned how old your son is but my son had a yz 80 when he was 10 or 11 but he had been riding for several years by then so he was fine.
You could compare the DRZ 125 with an XR 100 if you know what that is.
As to the maintainence, the cr 80 will require more, mostly just a new piston and rings once or twice a year depending on how much and how aggressive he rides. The piston and ring thing is fairly simple on a 2 stroke. The cylinder is nickel plated so unless it's damaged there is no need to bore. Just pull the cylinder put the new piston and rings in, reassemble and go. I'm being brief on the top end obviously but it's really not that hard. Can be done in an hour easily.
One last thing, just my opinion. If your son rides much he will quickly want more power than the DRZ 125 has. He can grow into the power of an 80 and there is also no comparison in the suspension.
Hope this helps, now go out and get that cr80!
