I don't spend any "extra" time around them. I usually pass them in an angry fashion, with a downshift, wide lane position, and W.O.T.
You can smell the tires cooking down before they blow, if you're downwind. I've done it a couple of times and saved my bacon by getting well away or completely off the road.
Ride safe.

Good point about the tractor trailer rigs, get out from behind them if possible. Also the "contractors" with their trailers. When I'm on the bike I always scan ahead and check for these trailers. This morning a "cement" contractor, with his 16 foot trailer full of the wood used for forms, and the 2x4 spikes they drive into the ground. Comes fast up behind me in the passing lane, in the mirrors I thought it was just a pickup passing me. The guys are pulling the trailer, and these 2x4 x 3 ft. spikes are falling off the back of the trailer. 2 cars and I got the hell out of the way, real quick. 3 of these damn things were shooting across all three lanes, somehow didn't hit any of us or cause an accident. We all got lucky this morning.

Here in Tallahassee, we've had a major interstae reconstruction between the East and West sides of town. It seems like everyday the lanes change or one lane is 1 1/2" lower than the other. It makes for some tricky commuting to and from the work house
One end is finished now and boy is it smooth

Wow
The noise would have scared the crap out of me. I am glad you came away from it ok.
I have a question why dosn't the Gov't outlaw retreads? They regulate helmetsj, seat belts, smoking, speed, transfats in fast food, but to make the highways safe forget about it.

The Alabama HP has a semi rig that they take to bike events that has the blind spots painted on the trailer. They set up bikes around it to show where truckers can see you, maybe. WOW. They can't see bikes for ****. After seeing it I have a whole new fear factor of getting around big rigs.

Big tip... if you can't see their mirrors... they can't see you! I never hang around them anyway... it's not safe, and loosing a cap is one of the most frequent things that can go wrong.

I've heard too many horror stories about tires blowin off. With all the other things that can happen, I guess I'll just wear DEPENDS!
