Rear Tyre Size 5 Years, 7 Months ago
I don’t know if this has already been asked but, I currently have a 150mm Rear tyre on the back of my 06 bagged Roadie. The VStar 1100 comes with a 180mm Rear Tyre.
Is there any reason for this other than to confuse me.
And can I fit a larger tyre on the standard rim with out causing any dangers problems.

the biggest reccomended on the standard rear rim is a 160.

any bigger than that and you pull the walls of the tyre in and gain nothing in width.

I thought that it will even pull in the sides of a 160 making it a little taller? People like that because it corrects the speedo. Anything bigger requires at least some grinding. Yes? No? Musky, you've went to the bad place again

No.

You can put a 180 on the stock rim but as it's been said it gets pulled in and it does not look as wide as it should be. As it gets pulled in you don't have to grind anything.

On the other hand, it you go to the proper sized rim (5.5) then you will have to grind as the tire maintains the proper width and will rub.

Check out this link ..... http://www.jpcycles.com/Tech/Ref/tireinfo.aspx

When chosing the tire, you also need to make sure that your rolling circumference will be approximately the same.

Thanks Guys it seems I will be trying the 160 tyre of the bike when the old one wears out.
The reason behind this question in the first place is that when turning into a corner, if I try to put any power on to speed up a little in the bend I find that the back end steps out almost to the point of losing the bike totally

Post edited by: Ossie Art, at: 2006/10/26 05:47

I have the 180 ME880 in the rear. The tire is stickier that stock and I can swing the rear end over if I twist the throttle too early in a turn. It's fun when you expect it.

In the rain you have to be careful but I guess you don't get much of that down your way.

Yeah. Go there alot. Thinking of applying for citizenship.

Just out of pure stubborness I still don't belive that you don't have to at least grind down the fender bolts or something even if you put a 180 on the stock rim. (which I don't know why anyone would) But that's just a drowning man grasping at anything that floats.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/10/26 16:50
