Installing Yamaha Backrest on 2004 Roadstar 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Howdy Once Again,
I just bought a "genuine" Yamaha Roadstar sissy bar (backrest) with the mounting brackets, pad and sissy bar to mount on my 2004 Roadstar. The mounting brackets look like P/N STR-5GA41-10-00.

I went out this evening to install and removed the bag supports that were on the bike when I bought it and the fender accent trim (which the bag supports were mounted on. The mounting bracket will bolt into the fender holes, but the bracket does not mount flush to the fender. The backrest mounting bracket holes guides on the fender side extend out about 1/8" or so the bracket is not flush as it seems it would. It doess not appear that the backrest mounting bracket installs over the fender accent.

Can anyone tell me whether the backrest mounting bracket is supposed to mount over the fender trim somehow... maybe I have the wrong fender accent piece???

The stock trim (commonly called eyebrows) comes off. The two backrest sidearms get bolted onto the fender. There will be a small gap between the sidearms and the fender to prevent paint damage. Once they are bolted on, install the backrest upright.

Thx for the feedback, just seemed like the mounting brackets would mount flush to the fender! I found an old post that Doc responded to (for a 03' R*) suggesting to put a felt washer on the backside of the bracket so the hole guides don't scratch the paint. Now I need to find a creative way to use the throw over bag supports which i believe are Yamaha bags supports. Never easy! Thanks again

As a point of clarification, if anyone knows.... I thought the difference between the R* models (E.g. Silverado, Midnight...within the same year .. ala 04' were different intalled packages like windshield, seats, backrest, bags... So is the reason that the backrest mounting bracket don't mount flush against the rear fender because it is typically installed over the Yamaha bag brackets, or, does the backrest mounting bracket always not mount flush against the fender? Seems that someone would want to have the backrest without bags. Thx again for any feedback.

Hey bluezdawg

Are you talking about the gap where the backrest mounts are? Like in this pic.

Blue, like I said previously, the stock trim comes off before installing the backrest side arms. I am not even sure they would fit inside the backrest sidearms, but if they did, you would have a larger gap and the upright might not fit in the sidearms. The spacer that the bolt installs through to mount the backrest sidearms is slightly longer to make the metal stand away from the paint. If it did not, it would leave scars in the paint from the vibration. The standard and silverado bikes are exactly the same except in the trim package, windshield, backrest and bags. The backrest will look the same whether mounted to a Silverado or Standard bike. Hope this helps.

DAWG, sounds like you are finding good ways to spend the money you saved on pipes!
Next should be new bags!!! Our riding weather is getting hit and miss now, but next good weekend we should ride a bit, especially before the gravel piles up on the streets.

Dawg
as you can see from Musky's pic the saddle bag brackets mount OUTSIDE the backrest side arms and if you have Silverado soft saddle bags and opt for the passenger grab rails they go between the saddle bag bracket and the side arms

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/10/27 02:27

Thank you all for the feedback. Think I will stop by the stealer this afternoon to take a look at somne of the rigs they have there, or, I will try to get by and look at Bru's Silverado. Hopefully it will warm-up so I can get the backrest installed this weekend!

Yo Bru!
Yup, moved from one money pit (the 36 Dodge) to another! You are right, the stage 1 mod we did (thx again for helping with that) really gave the bike a better sound and actually runs better with the Kury. Twin V. Was good enough that I did not go drop a few hundred on the pipes right away. Also, I got the visor in the headlight, what a bizarre rig that is! Thank for the pointers, you are right about lining that piece of tin with something to muffle the vibration, went for a ride Monday and sure as heck, it started vibrating after a bit Ultimately I think I will invest in some nice lights! Got the instrument visor but will wait till it is warm enough for the adhesive to stick.

On the bags, you are right, I have a pair of Silverdo bags spotted with mounting brackets, may just have to do it! Should have bought a freaking Silverado to begin with... but like Musky, I JUST LOVE THAT WHITE BIKE could not wait, just had to have it then! You bet, we need to get out and ride while we can, give me a shout when you you're free. Suspect we will have a few days left to ride (no comments from the fair weather folks... the skiiing is still really good here).

My bother is coming in from Kansas tonight and we are thinking about heading up to Oscar Blues (with our better halves in tow) tonight if they get in early enough. Scott Holt (who played with Buddy Guy) is playing there this evening. He is a serious guitar slinger, should be a good evening!
