Guage reads empty after 3.5 gallons, typical? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
Newbie question... I've had the bike for a month now and haven't run it dry to see if it's guage or capacity yet. I get a low fuel light at 130-140 miles, then can't put in more than 3.5 or so to top it off. How much does the tank actually hold? I'm happy with the mileage, but curious about the range. Is this typical or is my guage way off? Mine is an 03'. Shouldn't the main tank hold more? What is your range/capacity? Thanks, Randy

my low fuel light comes on after about 155 miles, then i can normally go another 15-20 miles before i need to open the reserve valve. They both feed off the same tank, around 5 gallons, just different levels in the tank. When I refill it, I normally stop at the neck and it runs 3.5-4 gallons depending on how far i go after the light comes on or using the reserve. I know some top their tank out more than others, but I don't feel like stand there giving it a "squirt" every couple of seconds for an extra cup of gas.
Hope it helps.

Thanks cass, sounds like it's within normal limits. I'll top it off and run it til I need the reserve and see what I get. The bike feels great at all rpm's and has only had exhaust ( V&H longshots) and intake (K&N and re-jet) mods. I'll peek at plugs, but I think it's probably normal and just me getting to know the bike. Cheers,
Randy

My gauge seems pretty accurate. When it says I'm running out of gas, it means it.
One thing I noticed in the manual was a warning against topping off the tank. Once the tank is supposedly full, I can still get another gallon in there by trickling it in. The station I go to has pumps that allow for the steady trickle instead of the spurts thing. (My Ford F250 V10 is the same way, except I can get another four or five gallons in there, giving me that $100 fill-up I love so much.) I assume the reason Yamaha tells you not to top off is because of potential overflows/fire hazards if the tank and contents heat up in the sun.
By the way, I burn non-oxygenated premium.

and you shouldnt be unless you have HC pistons..
the burning of lower volatile premium fuels in a low compression engine leads to incomplete burn and carboned up valves..
burn the more volatile regular gas...

Interesting. Sure don't want carboned-up valves.
Do you know if the same applies to boat motors, 50's cars, lawn mowers, etc.? Is this just a Minnesota thing? Most people I know seem to hold a negative view of oxygenated gasoline in non-automobile applications, and most people I know (including myself) are not particularly knowledgeable about engines. There's also the perception that ethanol in gas has a negative effect on gas mileage, especially the E85 stuff.
I checked for threads on this, and it's been a while since it was discussed. Might be worth starting a new one.

Hello again. I appreciate all of the info. I noticed the recommendation for regular gas. What octane is best with my application (stock plus intake and exhaust - maybe Dyna 3000 and front pulley for next year)? I have been using higher octane as that's what seller was using. This is a 1600 with 3,000 miles on it. Thanks again,
Randy

Okay, I'm starting to get the hang of this. Thanks again all. Just did a search on octane and got the info I need re: fuel. I'm going to decrease the octane I'm using with next tankful, if the rain ever stops!

I quick check of my 2000 owners manual shows Fuel tank capacity at 5.3 US gal (4.4 Imp gal, 20L) Reserve amount .9 US gal (.08 Imp gal, 3.5L) Like krauseheim said a new forum on octane could be in order. Pop Rivet said something interesting about not needing Higher octane fuel unless running HC pistons. I have been running premium in my 2000 R* for 51k now. I sure would run mid or lower if I knew it was better for the bike.
