I have a career as a firefighter and have been to many wrecks. They vary between interstate I-85 and city streets and country roads. I have been to wrecks where people were wearing full face helmets, proper fit, helmet strap tight, helmet flies off and still messes up their face. I have also been to wrecks with "brain bucktet" helmet and their face/head not as messed up as bad as the full face guy. Been to them wth no helmet and no damage at all, just lost his legs. Anyways I think that we are all grown men and women here and should be able to make our own decisions as to whether we wear a helmet or not. I would personally not wear one if Alabama did not require one but thats the way it goes.

Depends on what I'm doin and where I'm goin. To the store, its gloves, shorts and no helmet. Around town, gloves, helmet usually just a brain bucket)shorts or jeans. Long ride, gloves, half helmet, jeans and appropriate outwear to weather conditions. All done in tank tops and tee's.

I live in PA, no helmet law here, I never leave home with out one. Ever. I may not wear gloves and chaps, jacket or pads on every ride. But I always wear a helmet, I have screws and pins from a bike wreck in my left leg, I would probably be drooling on myself if I wasn't wearing a helmet. Head hit the ground fairly hard on the temple, helmet took it all.
I personally think that people that choose to ride with out helmets and sustain head injury's should be made to pay for all the medical and everything else themselves and should not be allowed to get free medical or tax sponsored assistance.
You choose, you loose. Its not that hard.
Think I'll get any response to the truth??

I'll agree with papatom. I wear the helmet in high traffic areas such as city driving, but otherwise it's always with the top down.
I read a reply to this question awhile back somewhere that said:
"I'll give up 50% of my hearing, 20% of my sight, 35% of my sense of smell, and 60% of my enjoyment, and wear a helmet every day."
I think the rider with full padding, full helmut, earphones and microphone can be as dangerous as a cager; unaware of most of what is happening around them.
I'm for personal choice, which it is in my area. And the dog won't wear one either.....

It's a choice thing unless you have a mandate by your state. I ain't got nothing against them and wear one about 50% of the time but I've had enough of governmental intervention on my behalf. Look where it's got us so far. M2CTS.

I would say that, like seat belts, it boils down to personal responsibility.

So let me get this straight to your truth!! If I'm out there riding my motorcycle without my helmet and some jackass decides to cause me to wreck, I should not get any help because I wasn't wearing a helmet?? 96% of motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers in cars!!! So if its not the motorcyclist fault why should we be made to suffer???? Perhaps your in your car and some piece of crap decides to car jack you and smashes your head in or shoots you, I guess you should have to suffer cause you chose to not lock your doors and protect yourself Right???? This argument could be taken in to many other areas in life!
My choice is to not wear a helmet. I have been doing that for 40+ years. I wear one in the states that require it or when I was younger and was drag racing motorcycles I wore one but other then that I prefer to not. I feel everyone should have that choice. And I will be D***** if someone will tell me I should suffer for that choice if it wasn't my fault!

Some topics have a tendency to generate discussion while others, like helmets, seem to bring out the politcal side of people. I'd like to think that here on the Clinic we can keep politics at bay. But in any case everyone has their own opinion and should be allowed to voice it. Personally if I don't agree with someone's stance I'll take it to the PM area and go from there. I try and keep my personal views out of others faces.
