If someone tries to climb Mount Rainier without the most basic of equipment, and needs to be rescued, I believe they should be made to pay for that rescue. I believe that a helmet is the most basic of equipment for riding a motorcycle.

I live in the land of helmet laws, seat belt laws and free health coverage. A helmet saved my life and a seat belt saved my daughters life(twice).
I'm curious how many non-helmet guys out there have ever been in a serious accident riding. Probably not too many.

The freedom of riding is just as sweet whether you wear one or not.

edit: If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it's free!

One thing I've learned over the years on the internet is that most people here have more common sense than the average person in the real world. We end up paying for mistakes of the average joe we meet in public, and if that costs me the price of having to wear a helmet, then so be it. Rather not be dead

For me, its the law... flipped, slid, crashed sideways into a the back of a car when I was young.. had the helmet never even a scratch on it. If just running around the block in the neighborhood might go without the helmet.. when drying off the bike or getting a quick check after maintenance to be sure no leaks, before a real ride..
But as much as I ride looking out for the other guy, its still usually the other guy that will have you thanking god you wear a helmet... if and when anything bad happens.

I wear a helmet, gloves, boots and a leather jacket...but I never wear pants...just seeing if you're paying attention

I wear one but I don't like it, it's the law here.
That said I also think that if I split my melon and don't have one on then no one should have to pay for me being stupid.
Now that said, I use a non-DOT novelty helmet.
Yeah, real contradiction. Such is life.

Interesting viewpoints. If you crash and break your spine / neck and you end up bed ridden for the rest of your life are you left out in the cold with no financial support also because you weren't wearing full body armor? Why draw the line at helmets? Please explain this thinking. It's always baffled the hell out of me.
