Gasoline... what should Road Stars burn? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
|

Here's a topic for ya..... What kind of gas oughta go in a Road Star tank? Plain old 87 octane unleaded, like it says? Is higher octane gas a waste of money? Does higher octane gas do harm to stock Road Star engines, and should it be used only with high compression setups?
Also, in Minnesota, we've got oxygenated gas (10% ethanol?). Some stations sell non-oxygenated premium for, as the sticker on the pump says, use only in collector vehicles, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, boat motors, lawn mowers, etc. Should or should I not use that in my stock Road Star?

I think burning higher octane helps keep everything nice and clean.and were talking less than a dollar more per fill up..worth the extra $$$ to me..

This has been discussed to death, higher octane does not mean cleaner better gas. High octane only means higher resistance to detonation from compression. Roadies have a low compression engine 8:1, high octane fuel will not burn completely and will leave more carbon on the valves. Roadies without high compression pistons 10+ :1 do not need high octane fuel. Don't mean to be short, but this issue comes around and around and octane is perhaps the most misunderstood fuel additive. Regular gas is actually more volitile than high octane and will burn more compeltely and deliver the most engergy. In fact your Roadie should run better, and stronger on regular uless modified. I say should all engines are different, but without high compression higher octane is generally not needed.

The Roadie doesn't have high enough compression to burn premium correctly. Any cleaning advantage is lost in carbon build up. Waste of money IMO.

bob, stop holding back and tell us how you feel
Yep, use 87 all the time. When new I ran premium for a couple of tanks when the bike was new and didn't know better, I fouled my plugs and caused all sorts of havoc.
There are search features on this forum. Many times what people ask has been asked before. Wonder how many people use it?

You're just beggin' for a serious case of SVS from carbon build-up. Run the cheap stuff and your Roadie will love you for it.

they said it all 87 octane, best for the roadie.
if you have problems because of the ethanol, you might have to jet or tune accordingly.
Michigan has e-10 at most stations they used to tell you at the pump, but not any more, and has been around since 2003..
