I always down shift when slowing down, but I am careful not to use it as an engine brake. Owner manual says that is a bad thing.

Shoot, I down shift all the time, I just like to hear the engine wind down...lol. If you get it off a light, there is no difference as far as the engine is concerned. It doesn't know if your going or stopping as far as the stress loads I would think, anyway,
I know a guy that has a 1980 Honda that still has the original brake pads on the damn thing. That's the only thing he does is down shift and up shift.
I do it all the time and no problems yet!

My nine-year old Jeep still has the original clutch in it, and I downshift it all the time...

if they didn't want you to downshift, they would have made the transmission an automatic

Or down-shifting at 60 MPH (or just a little under) into 4th to pass around a vehicle.
Using a transmission to slow down a vehicle especially a motorcycle is uncalled for
At 60mph or less I'm not usually in 5th gear - no need. Downshifting is something I do all the time to slow down- always have and will. It prevent lugging your engine, it gives you the response you MAY need and it saves your clutch and brakes.
It's especially important during your break-in - do it or you may have problrmes..
I have never heard of anyone not downshifting. It's healthy.

One of the best things about downshifting is that it puts you in the proper gear for a quick getaway if one of the cages is coming after you.

I'm a huge fan of downshifting... being a trucker and all, gear selection and use of your gears is essential. The key to downshifting so it doesn't hurt is making sure your "proportions" are right, or ratio, or whatever you want to call it road speed:engine speed:gear selection as in when you downshift it, rev your engine up a bit to match the flywheel with the tranny speed and as such no shock occurs. As for strain on the tranny? I'm pretty sure if it can put up with the strain of hauling that beast at WOT, it can certainly handle a tame decel.

Cowboys like us sure do have fun, racin the wind, chasin the sun. We\'ll take the long way around back to square one. Today we\'re just outlaws out on the run. There\'ll be no regrets, no worries and such, for cowboys like us.
