Screwed up my Clear Coat! 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Well, I took my badges off my tank with our washer here at work-needless to say, it had WAY too much pressure and heat! Peeled the badges and glue bakcings off, but cut into the paint a little and took off a large area of clear coat...

Question-since I'm about to put new decals over the affected area, do I need to try to touch up the clear coat?

You can't see it unless you look really close....

I can't say yet, but the decals will definitely cover 80-90%. Is it smooth? Well, I can run my hand over the tank and feel the edges, but there aren't any pieces sticking out at all.

Any alternatives to shooting it with clear again?

Reason-if I don't care for the decals long-term, I'll pull them off, so I don't want to clear coat over them, too...

Maybe plan "B"

Find a good air brush artist and go the full distance...

I think you will like the result....

I think Pop Rivet called it... there's no better excuse for upgrading than busting your shaz up in the first place

Well, I've already committed to having the decals cut-in fact, I'm gonna sneak out of the office in about an hour and go have them put on. This wasn't meant to be a permanent deal-wanted something different, see how it looks, and maybe invest in a full-on job in the (near?) future...My problem with repainting is, like everything else, once I get started, I think of a 1/2 dozen other things to do at the same time.

In other words, if I like the design on the tank sides, I'll probably want torepaint everything-tank, and fenders (after all, I really need to get rid of the scuffs and nicks, right?). The only thing that has stopped me from going that route is I really like the black and white stock paint scheme (best of both worlds, for those out there that prefer white Rs over balck, and vice-versa).

anyway, I'll see how the decals look thi a.m.. I'll try to post a picture when I get back.

Wonder if I should have the decals clear coated over if I decide to keep them for awhile?

If the decals have a lot of pointed edges and in an area of wear...it protects the decal from peelin

are yer knees goin to be rubbin on the flames part of the 8 ball???

the pin stipping looks like it has been clear coated over...

ask the decal people what they think

Yep-I think the back edges may rub.

Wonder what it would cost to prep and shoot it with clear?

Depends how much clear they put on.;

Clearcoating is relatively cheap .... around $80 last time I asked ... just take the tank to any body shop.

If they do a light coat you'll still feel the edges ... the decal will not be buried but then again ... it will be easier to sand off when you want to remove it.
